Component to Firewire

I am looking for a device that converts Component video and RCA audio to Firewire, so that a movie can be imported into iMovie. I am currently using a Canopus ADVC110 for S-Video but have an HD source with component video and would like to be able to get it into iMovie. Does anyone know of a product that can do this?

Not sure I understand the question, as that is precisely what the ADVC110 does.

I connect my camera to the Canopus using an S video cable for the video and the red and white RCA cables for the audio. The Canopus is connected to the Mac by firewire - that is your conversion.

The video content is in 1080i HD, which S-Video can't transfer.

Can't you just change the cable for one the camera can use?

Are you sure iMovie 5 can handle that?

Its not coming from a camera, its from my Motorola DVR, I recorded my son in a hockey tournament which was broadcast on Comcast Sports Net in HD. Outputs from the DVR are either HDMI or Component.

I don't want to convert it to RCA, I would lose the HD resolution.

The only way you can bring it into iMovie is via firewire. If your DVR does not have a firewire output, I doubt if it can be done.

Unless there is a SCART to firewire cable?

My Canopus, model ADVC-100 has RCA, S-Video inputs, and firewire output. I can setup a VHS camcorder and download video into iMovie. It converts the analog signal to digital. I have also downloaded from an old style laserdisc movie using this Canopus model.

Our canopus also has a DV (digital Video) input. That is probably the one to use for your purposes - if you can get the correct cable.

But as your DVR output is already digital I am not sure if the Canopus actually need play a part in this operation.

I have spent hours attempting to solve the same issue - in fact the same issue as I have my son's hockey on a DVR recording from a HDTV broadcast.

What was most frustrating is on my Motorola DVR there are USB and 2 firewire outputs, which one can use to transfer download to an HD camcorder, which I attempted in this case. Unfortunately, it was only have screwing around for hours unsuccessfully did I find out from my cable provider (also the DVR retailer) that the USB and firewire outputs are disabled on the units they issue.

I have been unable to source anything to address the issue. Looks like an answer is on the way from Hauppauge with their proposed HD PVR, scheduled for delivery May 1 (???). No price info, but suspect it will not be cheap.
