Lookupd keeps crashing my system

For some unknown reason, lookupd keeps on crashing and sometimes rendering my system unusable until I hard reset.

this is the system log at the time of the crash. Note, i did not disconnect.

I am having a problem with lookupd also, but my system behaves normally. However I would like to find out what is going on.

First, in /var/log/system.log I see the following repeated frequently:

May 15 23:43:10 sarah launchd: Server 0 in bootstrap 1103 uid 0: "/usr/sbin lookupd" [1202]: exited abnormally: Hangup

Then in the console, starting in single user mode, executing applejack and selecting repair permissions, I get the following:

Tiger requires us to start up the bootstrap servers first.

Launched: Server 282b in bootstrap1103 uid0. /usr/sbin/lookupd [109] exited abnormally. Hangup.

Limiting closed port RST response from 251 to 250 packets per second
Limiting closed port RST response from 251 to 250 packets per second
Limiting closed port RST response from 251 to 250 packets per second
... etc

Applejack does repair permissions and does all the other things I ask it to do, and then the system restarts and behaves normally.

I have loaded Mac OSX 10.4 twice now. Both times have been erase and install. In one case I imported files from another system, and in another case I didn't import anything. I get the above errors on both machines (two 12" PowerPC G4, one 1GHz and one 867 MHz).

I just upgraded to 10.4.1 and still see the same error messages.

I found that the crash was caused by the crash reporter apparently freezing while writing the report.
By disabling the crash reporter I don't get any more crashes, I just keep on losing my connection. sometimes frequently and sometimes intermittent.
To disable crash reporter, there is a pref pane called diablotin which I believe is free which you can use to choose what you want to start up. A bit like the old extension manager. Give it a try and see what happens. Of course you will lose out on information on any other crashes, but frankly this is the only crashing that happens to me so I don't care.
Good luck

I found this program Unlockupd. The webpage has a good description of the lookupd problem, but I'm not sure whether this has anything to do with the error messages in single user mode, or the occasional network problem.

Get uplockupd here:
http://www.dshadow.com/software/unlockupd/

Will report back after running the little program for a couple of days.

I've identified the cause of my lookupd crashes. Safari loading specific web sited, in my case ABCNews.com. It is weird I know, but very reproducible. The site load noramally without crashing lookupd in Firefox--so it is safari specific. This happens on three different 10.4.2 machines I have, so appears to have generality and was confirmed by another user (see thread in Safari Discussion i posted)...

Safari 2.0.1 seems to have broken lookupd again. I had over 5 freezes and random internet cutouts today.

Unlockd is running, as reported by Activity Monitor, but I might install it again to see what happens.

Apple seriously needs to get this fixed. My PB's hard drive cannot take this kinds of abuse (hard shut down 3 times in a row).

There is an interesting and quite possibly very relevant thread going on in the Mac OS X server. It would appear that the system administrators there have narrowed the problem (by turning on debugging logging and perusing the log files) to lookupd. There was speculation on the page that lookupd crashes and crashreporter is started, and blocks lookupd until it is done, but crashreporter tries to use lookupd in some capacity creating a lockup situation. For those that don't know lookupd does more than DNS lookups, it also handles netinfo data (authentication among other important functions). The short story is no functioning lookupd, no computer, everything will lock up eventually and only a power button on/off solution will work. I personally have a G5 dual 2.7 GHz machine that is turning it into a nice shiny paperweight. I have to leave the network cable disconnected except for a few minutes at a time to get any work done. I personally have yet to try disabling crashreporter (which can be done in /etc/hosts.config) as I use it, but I am really desperate now and will try doing so Monday -- providing the continuous calculation I am doing is done...
