safely disconnecting external hard drive

Hey there, my first mac, just got it last night. Quite happy. Anyway I hooked up my external hard drive just to see if it would recognize it. Sometimes a bit finicky. Worked fine. Now I wanna disconnect. Is there a safely remove hardware feature similar to windows I should know about. What's the proper method for disconnecting this thing? It's been so tempermental I just wanna make sure I don't set it off on one of its pouty trips.

macbook pro 17 inch, 2.6 Ghz, 2 gig ram, Mac OS X (10.5.2), happy new mac owner, but my first time switching over

Lots of ways to unmount external drives:

• Drag the hard drive's icon from the desktop to the Trash (which will change to an eject symbol).

• With a Finder window open, click on the eject symbol next to the drive in the sidebar.

• With the drive selected in Finder, press ⌘-E or choose File menu > Eject.

You should do this with flash drives, hard disks, digital cameras, etc.

Hope this helps...
