Advice for iphone or ipod

As yet I don't have an iphone or ipod. But I have worked on a IMac G4 since 2003 and love Macs. I love pictures and so I am torn between treating myself to an ipod classic to put my favourite films and music on, sync my ical (I love ical, Apple should do more with it) and address book or perhaps using my 02 tariff to get an iphone, mostly for free. But the iphone has a low memory for films, and a very low res camera, I don't have much music, abt 2GB max. and I would be annoyed to find Apple upgrade the phone again a few months after I might get one.

Was thinking I might upgrade phone to Nokia N95 for the 5meg camera (pics are very important) and then buy an ipod, but I cannot help liking the iphone too. But Apple upgrade things so fast you can never keep up and I can only get dial up at home. But my windows XP laptop gets me downloads on the local free hotspot. Any advice from fans here? Many thanks.

G4, Mac OS X (10.4.11)

You are aware that you can't upgrade your handset, on your existing contract, as you can for other phones? If you get an iPhone, it will cost you between £269-£329, for the 8 and 16GB models, respectively, and you will have to take out a new 18-month contract?

But the iphone has a low memory for films, and a very low res camera,

The 16 GB model should have enough memory for you. As far as the camera is concerned, my feeling is that anything greater than 2MB on a mobile is really not worth it, as the photos take up a lot of memory, and it provides a degree of resolution not needed unless you want to print out your photos.

I know it's frustrating, but upgrades and new models are a way of life these days, in any technology. Whenever you buy anything, you're bound to find out that a better model is subsequently released.

If you have a slow internet connection, then that will make life difficult when it comes to downloading updates. With the iPhone, you get free data access (no limit) and free The Cloud Wi-Fi connectivity, wherever that service is provided, as part of the contract.

My advice: go for it! You won't be sorry. The iPhone has the best user interface out there, and has made it so easy to use the internet on the phone; no other model really comes close, as far as ease of use goes.

If you decide to go for the Nokia, then you might consider the iPod touch, as it has all of the non-GSM (i.e. phone) features of the iPhone, except the camera.

Hope this helps.

I agree with everything jia10 said.

The N95 may have a 5mp camera on it but it still doesn't take as nice a photo as a standalone digital camera because of the fixed focus lens. Cell phone cameras are really only designed for closeup snapshots.

Personally, I think you'd be better off buying the iPhone and a real digital camera rather than an iPod and a Nokia that tries to be everything and doesn't really succeed at it.

I can't help but remember the old phrase, "Jack of all trades but master of none."

ANY multi-function hand held device these days will pale in comparison to its uni-function counterpart. If photos are the most important thing to you, get a decent point & shotto.

I have an 8 gig iPhone and a respectable digital camera. I have 175 songs and 2 full length movies and a lot of photos on my iphone and still have a fair amount of room left. If I had 16 gig I could put a lot more on. I have taken some awesome photo with my iphone and they are way better than any of my friends get with their phones. I use my digital camera for important stuff. But I took some great landscapes with my iphone while traveling through the desert and mountains. I haven't printed them but they look really good on my big monitor. I say go for the iphone and camera. You won't regret it.
