I went and looked it up..

Adaptive Multi-Rate Codec File

Compressed audio format developed by Ericsson; used by many 3G cell phones for voice recordings such as MMS messages; incorporates the Algebraic Code Excited Linear Prediction (ACELP) algorithm, which is designed to efficiently compress human speech audio.

Program(s) that open amr files:
Mac OS
Apple QuickTime Player,
RealNetworks RealPlayer

Windows Apple QuickTime Player
RealNetworks RealPlayer
Mobile AMR Converter
AMR Tool

LOL - it sounds absolutely crap, I sometimes do field recordings with my mobile when I don't have my Marantz and my directional mics with me but those amrs are absolutely useless unless you like the tinny sound of it or use it as an artform. In Logic 7 I used to be able to drag and drop those into the Arrange - in L8 this is no longer possible.
