System 7 on a VM?

I have VMWare Fusion and I was just wondering if it's possible to run System 7 on a VM. I don't need it I just still have my old copy of System 7 from my old Macintosh Performa 636CD.

I downloaded Sheepsaver but how do I use it? it says I need a ROM image. What is that?

You need to get that from an older Mac; with later Mac OS versions, the Mac OS ROM file may be usable, but that didn't come with any retail system prior to Mac OS 8.5. You also need an existing Mac OS installation.

but it won't let me install system 7 because it says the classic environment is no longer supported

Install it on another Mac and then copy the finished system over.

what is a ROM image?

The contents of the boot ROM on a Mac, which is stored in the Mac OS ROM file on 1998 and newer Mac OS 9 compatible machines.
