Canon MF4270 won't print over TCP/IP: Printer Data Error

I've downloaded and installed the printer drivers from Canon's site.

Here's my setup:
iMac (Intel Core 2 Duo) running 10.4.11 connected to the net wirelessly via AirPort router.
The Canon is hardwired to the AirPort's ethernet port.
I also have an inkjet connected via USB to the AirPort -- it works fine.
Under Print & Fax, I see my printer, under Kind, I have "MF4200 Series UFRII LT", as I believe is appropriate.

So, the printer seems to be getting an IP from the AirPort just fine, and the Print & Fax pane seems to add the printer just fine, following the instructions in "MacUFR II_Guide.pdf" under 10.4 TCP/IP connections (p. 2-21). The next section, "Setting up the printer configuration/confirming the printer status," sends me looking under File>Print>Finishing for "Printer Information" or "Device Settings," however, neither button is present. In fact, where the image shows a button, my screen has none, while the pane is otherwise identical.

When I do attempt to print, two applications open up: UFR II Gauge & my printer's usual print queue, which works spins its wheels ("Processing Job") until it gives up. At this point, the printer gives three beeps and says "Printer Data Error" "Check Printer".

This behavior is all I've ever experienced... Except once: while attempting to print this very page, just to verify everything, the printer fired up and spat out an entirely blank sheet of paper! I have been unable to reproduce.

A similar question on this board suggested I print out the "User Data List." The output is a little odd, to me, anyway. On page 3, item 11. SYSTEM SETTINGS / NETWORK SETTINGS / VIEW IP ADDRESS / IP ADDRESS is 010.000.001.003. Item 11. ... / SUBNET MASK is 255.255.255.000. Item 11. ... / GATEWAY ADDRESS is 010.000.001.001. Those all look good, right?

Under 11. SYSTEM SETTINGS / NETWORK SETTINGS / TCP/IP SETTINGS I have IP ADDRESS AUTO. set to ON with sub-settings of DHCP=ON, BOOTP=OFF, and RARP=OFF, which is good also, right? Here, however, (under TCP/IP settings) IP ADDRESS, SUBNET MASK, and GATEWAY ADDRESS are all 000.000.000.000! Are these always zero when using DHCP?

If anyone can suggest some troubleshooting techniques or anything, really, I'd appreciate it. Of course, I'd be happy to relay any other info that may be relevant.

Thanks in advance,
Vijay

Yes.

No. Where are these 2 infos coming from?

What is the IP of the Mac?

In Printer Setup Utility, have you tried setting up an IP printer?

Hello Vijay,

I don't have the MF4270 but I have used the same UFR2 driver with our imageRUNNER copiers. Reading through your post I would like to suggest some things.

The UFR2 Guide says that for USB and simplex network connections, the Device Settings tab replaces the Printer Info tab. Since you don't have either button, the guide then says that if the tab is not displayed, the printer is not turned on. Now obviously it is turned on but there is a problem communicating with the printer. So I would say that either the printer queue has not installed correctly or there is a fault with the printer.

To make sure the printer is okay I would delete the current printer queue and connect the MF to the iMac USB. If you can print via USB then you could take the next step and connect the MF to the iMac's ethernet port using the same cable. You will have to manually set an IP address in the MF, probably something like 10.0.1.10 and a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0. You will also have to set an address for the iMac ethernet port, since it sounds like you are only using wireless at the moment. Try 10.0.1.5 and 255.255.255.0.

With the new addresses set, try adding the printer again, by selecting More Printers > Canon IP (UFR2). If the printer is communicating correctly, the correct driver should be selected and you should be able to print without the 'Data Error'.

If it does work via the directly connected ethernet, then you know the MF is okay and we can concentrate on the network connection via the Airport. Which model of Airport do you have?

As for the second menu showing all zeroes, I think this is what the machine does. Our iR1022iF which is a very similar model shows the same thing when DHCP is used.

Well, the printer works fine connected via USB direct to the iMac. I never got it running connected via ethernet, though.

Meanwhile, I've found that the printer does not support network scanning, whatsoever. (At least, according to the docs.) So, I've decided to go with USB. If I connect directly to the iMac, it installs fine; however, the iMac in question doesn't have a free USB port, and, anyway, it's more geographically desirable to connect through the USB on the AirPort.

Now I'm having issues with adding via USB. When I click the +, it finds the printer just fine: Name - "Canon MF4200 Series"; Connection - "Bonjour"; Location - my AirPort. The problem occurs when "Print Using:" is doesn't find the UFRII drivers, and the pulldown menu doesn't list UFRII as an option! Canon IP (UFR II) is still an option under "More Printers", but what would I put in for the Printer's address?

Anyway, I still haven't played around with this setup much. So, I may figure out the issue. I'll be sure to post here if I do.

With regards to the connection via the Airport USB, I found a similar limitation with a friend's MF4150. The Print Using menu would never find the 'pdd' and there was no way you could browse to it.

The Top Users on the Airport forums have said that the Airport USB does not support bi-directional communications. Thats why a number of users cannot get their scanners or AIO's to scan via the Airport Extreme or Express, and hence your scanning issue. Also, the lack of two-way communication would also stop the UFR application from receiving a reply to any query it sends to the printer to determine which model to add.

So now that we have determined that the printer is okay, at least from a USB perspective, we need to get the Ethernet working, especially with the USB limitations. Also, while 'pull' scanning is limited to the USB port only, I thought this model offered network 'push' scanning. With push scanning, you can configure a shared folder on your Mac and then using SMB or FTP, you can scan (push) to this shared folder. I will check with the friend who now has the MF4680 running on one of the older 'dome' Airport Extreme's. I'm pretty sure he has got it printing and scanning via wireless to ethernet.

Stay tuned...

Any luck with the friend yet? I worry that the 4600 series may be more fully featured than my 4200 series.

Meanwhile, I've found difficulty printing 2-sided, even when connected directly via USB to the iMac. It only prints page 2, and it gives an error on the printer itself. When connected through my old USB1.0 hub, I cannot even choose to print double sided.

In neither case do I find the missing button! What gives? ... Maybe I can get help from Canon's folks somewhere?

I also had a nightmare installing this printer, but i finally got it resolved. I originally used DHCP Auto to assign ip, subnet, etc. and no matter what I did, it would not recognize the printer and install the appropriate driver using the "Other Printer" section and selecting UFR II. I could enter the IP address of the machine, but it would always come back as Generic for the driver.

I resolved it, after much frustration, by doing the following:
1) Turned DHCP Auto off
2) Manually entered IP 192.168.1.XXX
3) Manually entered Subnet 255.255.255.000
4) Manually entered Gateway 192.168.1.1
5) Turned SNMP ON
6 Most importantly, I re-entered the SNMP Community name back to default - which is "public" all lower case
7) Restarted the copier

UFR II Printer Driver V1.70 for MacOSX
http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&tabact=DownloadDet ailTabAct&fcategoryid=335&modelid=15753

Immediately after doing that, I uninstalled and reinstalled the Canon Driver program (UFR II) and selected Other Printers, entered the manual IP address I assigned, and like magic (after about 5 minutes of scanning the printer), it worked. It selected the correct driver and it now works flawlessly. One other note, I plugged the network cable directly into my network switch, not my Airport Extreme port. Theoretically, it should also work by plugging the cable into the router, but I didn't seem to have any luck doing it that way. Anyways, hope it works for you.

Evan! You're my HERO! I've been all over the net downloading older drivers ... uninstalling ... reinstalling ... for almost FOUR HOURS! I'd just about given up, until I read your post.

Your suggestion of installing the version 1.70 drivers and and selecting "Other Printers" (on MY screen it said "More Printers") worked like a charm! (I'd already set the printer up on a fixed IP address during initial printer setup after taking it out of its box)

I'm going to go to the other forums that didn't have the answer yet and tell them about your magic also.

Thank you sooooo much!
