my ipod will only turn on when the hold button is on. i obviously cant do anything since it is on hold, and as soon as i turn the hold button off the power goes off. it shows up on my computer and i have done a full restore with no luck. i cant reset it by pressing menu and select because the only time the ipod is powered on, it is in hold mode. any suggestions welcomed and encouraged.

Since every thing else is shorting out with these iPods, you might have a short in your switch...try ejecting your iPod through itunes with switch on, but leave your ipod plugged into your computer and switch it on and off a few times while it's plugged in...but it sounds to me to be a short in the switch
ya, there is still no change in the situation. do you think this is a problem that i would have to send the ipod in to get worked on? (its out of warranty)
You might have to send it in, but what you should try first is to get an extended warranty on it, I'm not sure if iPod will allow you to do that, but try it. Once you get that extended warranty, wait a couple days, then send it in...I'm not sure if it would be cheaper have it fixed out right, or to get a warranty...but an extended plan might be a good idea and they'll have to fix it at no cost to you, there might be shipping charges with that, some extended warranty's won't charge you shipping fee...The sooner you do it the better...I would think...I hope thing's work out for you

You could try going into diagnostic mode. In my iPod Classic, one of the diagnostics is to check the position of the hold switch. Your iPod my be confused and read the switch as on when it's off.
ipod will only turn on when hold switch is on
