Flashing Globe

My iMac starts up with the flashing globe. I looked up the problem on apples site and tried to follow the directions. The only problem is that I don't have any other option for start up. The only option in the Startup Disk is the network start up. How do I go about adding or removing that so it starts up with out that annoying flashing globe.

Thanks

Hi! A couple of things you can try. First try holding the "x" key down at startup. Second if that doesn't work use the install disc and boot with it holding the "c" key down and then repair the hard drive. If you are holding down the option key and the globe is the only icon you are seeing then for some reason it's not seeing your hard drive. HERE are the instructions for repairing the drive using the startup disc. Tom

Would I be better off replacing the drive at this point? I do have random shut downs when I am doing something. Also the machine was making weird noises on the bottom left side. I suspect it was over heating.

I got the machine for free so I'm not complaining. I would love to get this off the ground with as little money spent as possible.
