Can't connect to Windows Server 2003.

I'm trying to connect to my companies network that's running server 2003 with 10.4.2.

When I try to connect- the finder "beach balls" for a long time and then gives me the following error:

"The alias "mothership" cannot be opened, because the original item cannot be found."

Any ideas?

Thanks.

OK-
Is your Mac in the correct Workgroup? (DirectoryAccess, SMB.CIFS>Configure. Workgroup must match your Server's domain/workgroup.

What if you leave the alias alone for moment, and attempt your connect with the FinderMenu, ConnectToServer:

In the Connect To: [box] , type
SMB://[mothership]/Foldername {enter}

Answer the password popup, and see if that works.
If you get the dreaded unknownPassword, or any "-36" r "-35" errors.
Do another search around the Groups here. (Or if you can't find the answers, stop back.
These questions are asked, and answered daily around here.

I've also found you have to use the (windows) servers IP,not its netbios name. Mac does not understand MS netbios, so 'mothership' would be an unrecognized name.

ala smb://ip.of.ser.ver/sharename

Also, if your domain is Active Directory (AD), you'll need to configure your Mac for that.

Ask your Net Admin folks If NTLM is set to 3, 4, or 5. If so, you may not be able to connect w/o 3rd party software.

OK- so I got the prompt for login coming up consistently because I've joined the domain.

But now when I try to authenticate I get a password incorrect error. Is this the same as the unknown password thing?

Also, when I boot the computer now, I can see an "other" option on login and I can login as administrator but not as my regular user account. Why would that be?

Thanks for the help.

Joiining the domain is a big step. Congratulations.

Not sure where you are when you're seeing a login appearing consistently, unless you haven't logged in to the domain. You're likely doing an AutoLogin still with your mac (thats a local login. not the domain...from the sketchy details). right?

Go into Accounts Prefs. Change your AutoLogin NOT to be automatic.
and to Display login window as "name and password"

"Other" is how you should be authenticating to your domain.
With your domain username/password/domain.

You've been trying to get logged into the Server network for a week since your first post...you're almost there 🙂

I can see an "other" option

This means the root account has been enabled.
make sure you know your real userid, not an alias.
You can check that in the user account pane and verify your userid(s) there.

But now when I try to authenticate I get a
password incorrect error

When you try to connect to a windows server/share, right?

For user IS, you may have to use the syntax

domain\userid

instead of just plain

userid

in the dialog box before the domain controllers can sucessfully locate your account.

Your system administrators have to create an account in the AD for your machine.

If your domain is set to NTLMv2, with level 3,4, or 5, you will need 3rd party software to successfully login to the domain.
