how do you find how much memory space you have left on your comp?

I assume you mean free hard drive space.

On the drive, option click on the hard drive and select "Get Info" This will show you used and free space on the drive.

Hi, I'm very new to mac, I don't know where to look for hard drive? I have been looking in this group forum to find out about using the computer. Would it be in preferences?

The HD is hidden by default. You can make it visible by going to:
Finder>Preferences>Show these items on the Desktop

Put a check mark in the square next to Hard Disks to make it desktop visible.
