I just bought an HP 1320 and have some advice for would-be and new buyers. On my main computer, a PowerMac G4 (with 10.4.2), I followed the HP instructions to the tee. Upon installing the Toolbox, I was prompted to restart. Did so, then was notified by OS X that it needed to fix security issues with the new startup items I had installed. I let it do that, it said I needed to restart, and did so. Upon restart, I was notified that the computer would be communicating with the printer and to let it do so. Clicked OK on that dialog box (the only option) and saw that "org.apache.catalina.startup.bootstrap" was running (with the icon of a Terminal command exec file). Let that go for a while (about an hour) and then saw that it was only using 0.5 percent of my CPU.
I decided to try to print, with no success (job stopped). Restarted jobs, it stopped again in a few seconds. Upon going to Common UNIX Printing System (CUPS) <http://localhost:631/printers>, found that "The process "usb" stopped unexpectedly with status 233." Cancelled the job, tried it again, job stopped. Fixed permissions, deleted the printer from Printer Setup Utility, readded it, tried printing again, job stopped for the same reason. Did this countless times with reboots and turning of the printer. Still no luck. Reinstalled the HP driver and toolkit. No luck.
Also tried printing with OS X's Generic Postscript Driver. Same problem: "The process "usb" stopped unexpectedly with status 233."
Than I remembered an open source HP driver for OS X, HPIJS <http://www.linuxprinting.org/macosx/hpijs/>. Installed EPS Gostscript then HPIJS Footmatic. Selected the HP LaserJet 1320 Footmatic as the driver, and the same problem happened upon printing: "The process "usb" stopped unexpectedly with status 233."
Now it was time to break out the iBook. I decided to plug the printer right in without the HP drivers. Printed like a charm (with Generic Postscript automatically selected by OS X). The problem was that I couldn't duplex with that driver. So, decided to install the open source driver since it supports the 1320, and it also works like a charm and duplexes (under Layout in the print dialog box). The other benefit I see in the open source driver (in addition to it actually working for me) is that it tells you what has gone wrong with the print job when it stops it.
So, I hope this helps those who want to duplex. If anyone knows how I can get my PowerMac to correctly print with the 1320, please let me know. Another thing - my PowerMac will no longer emit sound - not from the built-in speaker or to anything plugged into the headphone jack. Strange. I suspect it was the HP driver installation since my iBook's sound is fine.
