Can't print after upgrading to 10.4.2

I used disk permissions andgone to the system preferences and deleted and rebuilt my printer in the list. The printer is listed and can be found by the system, but whewn I print, the print progress bar shows up and after a few moments it goes away. The print job is still in the list, but nothing on the printer end. Anyone have anymore ideas on this?

I have a similar problem - weird printing after installing 10.4.2. Printer is an Epson "AcuLaser" AC-L900 (colour) USB with 128MB memory installed by vendor at purchase time.

Word processors print OK, but PDF files won't print easily, if at all - queue hangs, printer red light comes on, printer sits in "on" mode indefinitely, no messages at all from Epson Monitor 3.

Did the reset printers malarky, still no joy.

Interestingly, my wife can print browser pages perfectly (and quickly) from her G3 (white) laptop running 10.3.6(ish) via the wireless "netgear" router, from the other end of the house.

I must say that I don't think "upgrading" to Tiger worth the time or the money spent. I'm even seriously considering the dread task of rolling back to 10.3(.9), which is an indication of how much I don't like 10.4.x 😟. Spotlight and Dashboard aren't worth the drama.

Cash,
Lots of people with your model aren't having a problem. I think you should try Printer Setup Repair from www.fixamac.net.

No one has heard anything from Apple. My take on Tiger printing: about the same number of people have had problems as had problems in Panther -- the real issue is that these problems have been unfixable by us mere mortals here in the Discussions. Apple made changes that resulted in breaking printing for a several models, and breaking printing from Airport Extreme/Express for even more models. Not a pretty picture.

I just bought a Brother MFC 420CN all-in-one to use with Tiger. The copier and fax can be used independent of the computer and they work great in that capacity. My printer launches at startup, but when I try to print a document from any application, the application either stalls or quits--and the printer disappears from print utility. (I have managed to print three test documents, but can't explain why I got these rare successes.)

From the postings, I see that it doesn't seem to matter what printer I buy because Tiger is the problem. I can't get through my day without a printer and I'm at a loss to know what to do. Reverting to an earlier OS seems like an inappropriate solution given that I just spent much money upgrading a second computer's OS and application software.

When is Apple going to step into this conversation and offer a solution? (I've been using Mac since 1987 and this is my first bad experience--but it is really burning me!!!!

The 740 printers generally cause problems - they were the first USB printer for the Mac and had some USB problems. For a 740 you will want to make sure that the printer is attached directly to your Mac and not to a USB hub, your monitor, or the keyboard. You will also want to make sure that you are using an Epson driver and not the 740 gimp-print driver.

I just connected my printer to the USB port in the back of my G5 and printed a file. The progress bar marched up all the way to 100% and then the file disapeared from the active list and appeared in the completed list. However no print out from the printer.

Should I be in the market for a new printer today?

I've made a little progress. I can now get a print window to open.

What I did was . . . I changed the printer prefences to "generic postscript printer" and was able to get applications to remain active and a printer window to open. Then, when I switched the preferences back to "Brother MFC 420CN" and, by some miracle, retained the ability to get a print window without the application crashing!

However, although the computer says it is "sending data" and the printer says it is "receiving data," the computer eventually quits trying to send and says the printer is not responding. Yet, when I try to shut down the printer, it indicates that it has a job to finish before shutting down. Nothing is ever printed, but the list of "completed" print jobs includes everything I tried to print.

Brother will not help. They say it is Apple's problem. When are we going to get help from Apple??

SUCCESS!!! (With MS WORD only)
Okay, people, I can't tell you which of the following worked or why. I just know that if I hold my mouth the right way, I can now get Tiger to communicate with my printer. In summary, then:
PROBLEM: Whenever I chose "print" my application (any application) would stall or quit. After much fiddling,
1) I changed the printer prefences to "generic postscript printer" and was able to get WORD to remain active and a printer window to open. Then, when I switched the preferences back to "Brother MFC 420CN" and, by some miracle, retained the ability to get a print window without the application crashing!
2) I downloaded a system software update from 10.4.1 to 10.4.2
3) I thought I'd lost everything I'd gained for a moment when my application crashed on "print," the first few tries, however . . .
4) I realized at some point that print worked if I followed a very specific process: I must first choose "print preview" and then I must select print via the print icon in the preview window. (If I use print from the File menu, the application stalls or quits.)

This solution doesn't work for applications that don't have print preview. And, print preview restricts your printing options to one straight up copy. However, I could at least get some work done today.

I also am having problems printing (using Airport Extreme w/ HP PSC 2210) since upgrading to TIGER. I can usually get a WORD document to print, but can't get a iCal "day" to print, or other various web pages or PDFs ... The calendar page prints the very top edge then the rest of the page is blank. We have tried reinstalling print driver, but doesn't help. Just downloaded latest upgrade 10.4.2. Same problems. My husband who also has a Powerbook, has no printing problems on same network. The only difference: he hasn't upgraded to TIGER!
This is very frustrating.
