Photo Booth not working.

When I open Photo Booth, I get a black screen and a small icon of a camera with a slash through it. The green iSight camera light isn't on, but the camera is recognized in the System Profiler.

Does anyone know what's wrong?

Reboot your Mac, see if the problem persists.

Your color depth settings sometimes can change after running content that does not support 2 DPI depth. PhotoBooth probably returns to the right default settings after you have restarted your Mac.

Make sure you do not have other applications that use the iSight open at the same time, check other accounts as well.

Welcome to Apple Discussions, Woodsey8

First thing to try is all relevant suggestions from Apple's How to Troubleshoot iSight.

If your posted system info is correct that you are still using Mac OS X (10.5, also try the following:

• Backup your Home Folder, or at very least, your important files.

• Repair permissions. ( Click here if you need help.)

• Then download and apply the Mac OS X 10.5.2 Combo Update.

• Finish with another Permissions Repair, and then check your iSight again.

Users have reported fixes to a variety of audio, video, connectivity, and software conflicts and unreliability issues after properly applying Combo Updates.

If you need to post back for other ideas after trying all suggestions, please include a list of which apps work properly with your iSight (if any) and which still give trouble. Also, please tell us whether the problem is EXACTLY the same in every user account that you test.

Run software update>Apple Menu>Software update

After the restart:

Open address book>Archive>New Card>Card>Change picture>select the photo icon. Does the camera take a a picture and does it show up in address book (remove the test address)? Try Photo Booth again please.

In which applications did it work before trouble began?

Thanks for the new info, Woodsey8

With iSight not working with any app in any user account, check to be sure that someone has not removed your QuickTimeUSBVDCDIgitizer.component file as suggested in this article on how to Disable integrated iSight cameras. Look manually because Spotlight will not find this file. If it is not there, you will need to restore the file to its correct location in order for your built-in iSight (or any other USB camera) to work.

You should also check whether someone might have installed and set iSight Disabler 3 for Intel Macs.

If neither of those is causing your problem, and if you have tried all relevant suggestions in Apple's How to Troubleshoot iSight, check whether OS X System Profiler shows your built-in iSight as a USB Device similar, but not necessarily identical, to the one in this picture:

If iSight does NOT show in your System Profiler, try Apple's What to do if your computer won't recognize a FireWire or USB device.

If your problem persists after trying all suggestions, you likely have a hardware problem that requires professional help. Contact Apple or an Apple-Authorized Service Provider for service. Don't forget to backup your important data before talking your Mac for repairs.

Although I do not think it likely to help, if you want to try it in case it might help you avoid a service call, you could reinstall your entire operating system before taking your Mac in for service. After you have reinstalled Leopard, you can use the Combo method I suggested earlier to update to the latest Leopard version in one update step.

Thanks for the new info, Woodsey8

You have not told us whether you have tried all the suggestions already offered. Have you tested other user accounts and apps (not including Address Book's use of Photo Booth) that can use iSight as suggested in Apple's Troubleshooting suggestions?

If Photo Booth is the ONLY app that gives trouble in EVERY user account you have tested, the problem may lie within your Photo Booth application or its ancillary files. If you still haven't got it sorted, here are a couple things you can consider if you have not already tried them.

(0) It is possible that a corrupted Photo Booth Preferences file is causing your problem. Have you tried quitting Photo Booth (and all other applications) and throwing away the Photo Booth Preferences file (com.apple.photobooth.plist) from your Home / Library / Preferences folder? A new preferences folder will be generated when you restart Photo Booth.

(1) If resetting the Photo Booth preferences does not help, try reinstalling Photo Booth or using a different application. If you need help on how to do that, see this thread:

got the same problem. New iMac (few months).
Suddenly not only Photobooth gave me a black screen, also Ichat and Skype -the green light is on in my case...
Change photo in addressbook doesn't work either.
Tried everything, the applesupport isight instructions to begin with ofcourse,
yes, isight is detected in systemprofiler and
yes, that quicktime.component-thingy is still there,
tried resetting with cmd alt+PR....
and no I don't want to reinstall leopard!
I'm still hoping for a less radical solution.
More ideas?

Hello Ephra

I do not believe that reinstalling Leopard will help you.

I know you say you tried everything from "the applesupport isight instructions". You also specifically mention "resetting with cmd alt+PR...." However, you do not specifically mention whether you have reset the System Management Controller. Perhaps you intended to post that you have reset your iMac's parameter RAM (PRAM), which is properly done by holding down four keys ( ⌘ <option> P R) until your iMac starts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.

If you have tried all the suggestions already offered in this topic, contact Apple or an Apple-Authorized Service Provider for professional service on your new iMac.

You're certainly welcome, Ephra

From your linked post, I see that you have learned to be very cautious of advice from those who suggest terminal commands. Using terminal commands from known OS X experts is fine, but you are right that you must follow the instructions exactly. Because I did not post that advice in the thread that you link, I will not respond there. I offer my suggestions for that problem here:

If you do not already have a backup of your Home folder, or at least all of your important data files, make a backup ASAP.

Once you have a good backup, my best suggestion is that you add your new problem to your iSight trouble when you have your iMac serviced by an Apple-Authorized Service Provider. They will correct ALL your problems during the visit.
