epson 2200 driver no longer works w/ Tiger

I had to upgrade to tiger as my hard drive was about to crash and apple does not have the 10.3 any longer available as updates/ downloads.
go to 10.3 support and it takes you to tiger -- apple makes one buy tiger!
$ 140.00 just to find out that there is NO driver available for the epson 2200. the old driver wont work with tiger.
no special announcement on the apple or epson website!

that is a major disaster!
extremely frustrating!

and very unprofessional from Apple and Epson as they are both catering to creatives!!

I guess i can try to get 10.3 from someone and re-install the older system again (what a pain!) --or do i have to go back to 10.2 and update the system to 10.3? but all that is no longer on the apple site as tiger it must be .....

anybody has some better ideas?
much appreciated!

Check out my new post. I have always had a problem with Epson 2200 printer. I followed their instructions which I would be glad to send you. Now my Quark will not work at all I have fooled it & went to pref. & now have it locked into 13 by 19. So am able to print. but still can't print roll paper for large panorama shots. After you read my post maybe you can help me as I feel maybe I need to uninstall tiger & reinstall it again. I am very frustrated as My comp. was working great. You are right Epson & Apple need to get together as I like them both. Any help from you with my problem would be great, as to what I did. With the updated driver from Epson it looks as if it may work in photoshop as I can change settings just haven't tried it yet as paper is sort of expensive to waste a 13X35 roll of paper. I am not sure I answered your question. Let me know if I didn't as I will try & clear up. You are the first person I have come across who has had problems with The Epson 2200 printer and Apple. Thanks Judy

claudia,

Welcome to the Apple discussion boards.

Let me first say that I don't have an Epson 2200, so I'm not sure I can solve your problems, but let's see if there is some way we can get it to work.

I am sorry for the problems you are having both with the printer and feeling you had to upgrade to Tiger. I think a lot of this is a common misunderstanding of the difference between software not being supported or not being listed as being supported and whether it will actually work.

As to the Panther updates not being available. They are. Last week I just reinstalled Panther on a Lombard PowerBook. I started with the basic install. When I rebooted, Software Update automatically opened and showed me all the updates that were available. I also just did a search of the Apple Knowledge Base for "10.3.9 update" and easily found the 10.3.9 combo updater.

There is a driver available for Tiger and the Epson 2200. It is the same driver that is used in OS 10.2 and OS 10.3. It is available as a single download from the Epson support site. It also can be installed as an optional install from the Tiger install disk if it wasn't installed at first. If you look at the Tiger installation disk, you will find a package installer called "Optional Installs". You do not need to boot your computer to do this install. Just use the Tiger installation disk.

What can be confusing is that the Epson site only lists the driver as being for OS 10.2 to 10.3.2. The driver for my Epson 1280 is listed as being for OS 10.1.3 to OS 10.3.6. It works fine in OS 10.4.2. At this point, I see no reason to expect the driver for the Epson 2200 not to work. It should be fine.

Hope this helps.

Judy,

My public e-mail address can be found by clicking on my name on my posts.

You may e-mail me, but unless it is an extremely long response from Epson or contains information you do not want made public, I would rather handle it via the discussion boards. There may be others that can learn from your circumstance. Also there may be others that may be able to provide some insight that I don't have. If you do e-mail me, please make sure the subject contains the words Tiger and Epson. I do get quite a lot of spam. I wouldn't want your message to get lost.

If possible, make a follow up post to your original message "Tiger & Epson 2200 printer" with the additional information. I will warn you now that I have absolutely no experience or knowledge of Quark. If that somehow figures into the equation, all the more reason to keep the topic on the discussion boards.

This is what I did. I installed Tiger everything was working good until I installed the new printer driver that I down loded from the inter net Epson 11019.sea.hqx file. when it was instructed to select all my printer driver would have to force quit, all the info was there about all the new features roll paper & etc. But they would not work in Quark. or photo shop. So I wrote Epson again & this is what I followed. At the end of this info of what I did I will tell you my concerns.

Please follow the steps below to completely remove and reinstall a
downloaded driver for your printer in OSX.4

DEVICE REMOVAL

1. Open the MAC HARD DRIVE, APPLICATIONS folder, UTILITIES folder, PRINTER
SETUP UTILITY.
2. Highlight any listings of the Epson drivers and select DELETE.
3. Close the PRINTER SETUP UTILITY.

REMOVE FILES

1. Double click on the MAC HARD DRIVE.
2. Double click on the LIBRARY folder.
3. Double click on the PRINTERS folder.
4. Drag the EPSON folder to the trash can.

NOTE If you receive an access denied error message, this indicates that
you do not have root access. You will need to contact Apple for assistance
on obtaining Root Access.

5. Close any open windows.
6. Double click on the MAC HARD DRIVE.
7. Double click on the LIBRARY folder.
8. Double click on the RECEIPTS folder.
9. Delete any Epson Receipts.
10. Close all windows that are open, and restart your computer.

NOTE: The following procedure will remove all printers that you have
installed on your computer. If you have multiple printers on your system,
you will need to re-add all your printers once this is complete.

1. Make sure that your printer is turned on and connected to your computer.
2. Open the HARD DRIVE, go into the APPLICATIONS, and select the UTILITIES
folder.
3. Double click on the PRINTER SETUP UTILITY. Click on the PRINTER SETUP
UTILITY Menu option at the top of the screen and click on RESET PRINTING
SYSTEM. Click on RESET when prompted and then enter your system password.
This will remove all printer drivers in the list and you will have to add
all of them again. Now download the current printer driver.

DOWNLOAD

Please follow the steps below to download and install your printer in OS X:
1. Go to the website http://support.epson.com
2. Under the PRINTERS heading select Ink Jets and then your printer model.
3. Under the Drivers & Downloads section select Macintosh. Download the
most current version of the Printer Driver for your Macintosh operating
system.

INSTALLATION

1. After download is complete, double click the icon that appears on your
desktop, then click CONTINUE, then CONTINUE again, then OK on the
INSTALLATION WAS SUCCESSFUL screen.
2. Open the new folder created by the extraction process. It will appear
something like epson1XXXX (X represents variable numbers).
3. When you open this folder, you will find a file with a .DMG extension -
double-click it. This will create another icon on the desktop with the name
of your printer. Double-click to open the DISK IMAGE file.
NOTE: In most OS 10.3 systems the installer will perform this step
automatically and you will see an INSTALLER.PKG file.
4. Double click the INSTALLER.PKG file to start the installation process.
5. The next menu will prompt you to ensure that you have Administrator
Rights to install the printer driver. Click on the lock (if necessary) and
enter your password.
6. The actual installation process will begin. Click CONTINUE, then
CONTINUE again at the SOFTWARE AGREEMENT window, then CONTINUE again, then
AGREE.
7. You will be prompted to select a disk to install the printer to. Select
the appropriate Macintosh HD or OS X drive or partition and click CONTINUE.
8. In the next window that appears, click INSTALL.
9. You may be informed that the computer needs to be restarted after
installation; click CONTINUE INSTALLATION here. The driver will now be
installed and the system optimized.

Woops I sent you the first Epson inst. This is the one I am concerned about, maybe having 2 Tigers on my desk top. SORRY

Please follow the instructions below to completely remove and reinstall the
resident Epson driver package for your printer. You can leave the printer
on and connected throughout.

REMOVE FILES

1. Double click on the MAC HARD DRIVE.
2. Double click on the LIBRARY folder.
3. Double click on the PRINTERS folder.
4. Drag the EPSON folder to the trash can.
5. Close any open windows.
6. Double click on the MAC HARD DRIVE.
7. Double click on the LIBRARY folder.
8. Double click on the RECEIPTS folder.
9. Delete any "Epson" receipts.
10. Close all open windows and restart your computer.

REINSTALL THE EPSON DRIVER PACKAGE

1. Insert your Mac OS X 10.4 Install disc. Open CD when it appears on the
desktop.
2. Find and double-click on the Optional Installs.mpkg.
3. After the installer opens, choose the following custom install options:
-Check "Printer drivers" and use arrow next to this entry to expand this
category.
-Check "Epson" below the "Printer drivers" heading. (You do not need to
install other manufacturer's packages.)
4. Click "Install" and follow prompts to reinstall the resident Epson
printer driver package. Restart the computer after installation is
complete.

READD THE PRINTER

1. Go into HD > Applications > Utilities and open the Printer Setup
Utility. The "Printer List" window appears.
2. Highlight and delete any existing references to your Epson printer. (If
you want to be thorough and do not have any other printers on the Mac,
choose "Printer Setup Utility" from the top of the screen and "Reset
Printing System". Confirm resetting the system. This clears any existing
printer entries and queues. If you have other printers on the Mac and use
this reset, you will need to readd them later.)
3. Click ADD. Printer Browser window appears. (At this point your Epson
printer must be on and connected.)
4. Highlight the desired Epson printer model and click the MORE PRINTERS
button at the bottom of the window. (Do not change any other fields.)
5. A window now opens which is identical to 10.2. and 10.3, where you can
select EPSON USB (for a USB cable connection) or EPSON FIREWIRE (for a
firewire connection) at the top of the screen. Highlight your printer's
name and select Page Setup "ALL" below, then hit ADD to return to the
Printer List with all available printer/layout options now showing. (If you
are unable to see the full description under "Kind" you may need to expand
the Printer Setup Utility window or extend the "Kind" column to make this
visible.)
6. Make the printer name/layout option you wish to use default in the
Printer Setup Utility before closing it. For example, if you plan to do a
borderless print, ensure the printer name showing "(Sheet feeder -
Borderless)" under "Kind" is set as the default printer here. Then, when
you have opened a photo and are ready to print, go to File > Page Setup and
File > Print in the program you are printing from and ensure that the
specific printer/layout option you want to use is also selected as
"Printer" or "Format for".

I have an Epson Stylus Photo 2200 connected to my Mac by Firewire. I recently upgraded from Panther to Tiger (now 10.4.2), and have had no problem printing to it from Photoshop CS. I don't know how to explain the difference between my experience and Claudia's. However, I have had a less serious, but related problem. Since upgrading to Tiger, I have been unable to use the Epson Printer Utility. It starts up, says it's looking for printers, and then crashes, bringing up "The application EPSON Printer Utility quit unexpectedly." dialog. Does anybody have any idea what's happening, or how to fix it?

Aug 6, 2005 5:17 PM in response to claudia goetzelmann

I had the same problem. The fix is to use the Gimp Drivers that are included on the Tiger Install Disk You can also download these via the Web).

Open the Tiger CD
Open the Optional Installs package (Just below the Install Mac OS X icon)
When prompted to choose what you want to install,
Under Printer Drivers
Choose Gimp Printer Drivers
After installation, use the Printer Setup Utility to add a new printer. If your printer is connected (via USB, FireWire or Network) and turned on, it should be straight forward from there (the utility auto fills after you select the printer at the top of the dialog)

Gimp Drivers are created through open source developers who are kind enough to share these with the rest of the world. They may not support every single printer function but most have all features.

Judy,

After rereading all of your posts, it sounds like you are on the right track. It is unclear whether Tiger was reinstalled when you first went back and used the Tiger installation disk to reinstall the Epson drivers.

To see if you have two copies of the System files on your computer, double click on the hard drive icon. This is where you should see the listing of Applications, Library, System, and Users. If you find another folder named something like "Previous System", then you have installed Tiger twice. The Previous System folder is not functional and should cause no problems. However, if you do have a folder titled Previous System, you should delete it. This will save space and avoid confusion. If you do not have something with a such a name, do not delete anything.

As I have mentioned before, I do not really know anything about Quark. Some applications tend to put extra files in various places on the hard disk that are outside of the Application folder. It might be an idea to see if the Quark installer has an uninstall option. If it does, I would recommend that you uninstall Quark and then reinstall it. If there is no uninstaller for Quark, you might try deleting the Quark application from the Applications folder and reinstalling Quark. This should reinstall any missing files.

That's about the best advice I can give you. It does sound like you have the printer installed and working at least in Photoshop, so everything should be in place unless some Quark files are not there anymore.

You might also want to try using the Gimp-Print drivers as mentioned in another response. Many people don't think the quality is as good as the Epson drivers. This could also be a check to see if all the Quark files are present. If the Gimp-Print drivers will work with Quark, then everything should be fine with Quark.

I also upgraded to Tiger last month, but I did not have problems with my 2200. I installed both the driver from the Epson site and the one from the Tiger disk. I would have installed just one, but I was trying to figure out how to get it to see the printer through my FireWire port since that's how I have it connected. The answer in that case was to click the "More Printers..." button to gain access to the "Epson FireWire" popup menu.

I think that the theory of the GIMP driver being the solution may not be completely true, because one of the things I did after installing the Epson 2200 driver is run the GIMP-Print Uninstaller. My 2200 still worked after that.

(Side note: The reason I run the GIMP-Print Uninstaller is due to specialized workflows I use which only output accurately if the true Epson driver is installed, and which will be ruined by the GIMP driver. If you're sufficiently curious about this obscure special case the background is here and here. The linked pages mention Panther, but that's only because that is the version of OS X that first used CUPS+GIMP.)

The main point of this post, though, is to say that the drivers provided by Apple and Epson do work in Tiger, even if they have out-of-date supported OS X versions on them.

I'm curious as to HOW it's not working. Is it the lack of roll paper sizes? This could be related to the issue I mentioned earlier, which was the inability to access all the features of the printer in the first Printer Browser dialog opened by the Add button in Printer Setup Utility. Again, I was only able to access my 2200 over FireWire by clicking More Printers and changing the pop-up menu to the connection interface in use by the 2200 (Epson USB, Epson FireWire, AppleTalk, IP...). This allowed me to see my printer and install my favorite version of the driver, "Stylus Photo 2200(FW:Standard - Minimize Margins)." This is also where the roll paper and other special size options can be added.

I hope this long-winded post helps clarify the real issues...

Network 23,

I'm not going to argue with your success. A couple of points are interesting to note however.

I installed both the driver from the Epson site and the one from the Tiger disk.

This should not be needed. The Epson drivers included on the Tiger disk are the same if not newer than those available from their site -- at least in cases I have looked at. For the 2200, Tiger installs the FireWire plugin version 1.94. The Epson download has version 1.72. I'm sure the newer plugin was not over written if you installed the Epson download. The printer plugin for the 2200 is the same version using either the Tiger installations disk or the Epson download -- version 1.84.

only output accurately if the true Epson driver is installed, and which will be ruined by the GIMP driver.

Again, I won't argue with success and the issues addressed in your references go beyond my level of expertise as to the ICC profiles and the level of accuracy professionals use versus what those not so trained would even notice.

I do find this interesting however, as it has always been my impression that the major vendors such as Epson and HP pretty much bypass if not totally bypass the CUPS system upon which the Gimp-Print drivers rely. Perhaps there is something in the way the ICC profiles get clobbered by the Gimp-Print install?

Further, I do wonder if you have actually removed the Gimp-Print drivers that were installed by the Tiger installation. The uninstaller linked to in one of your references certainly predates the Gimp-Print v5.0 beta 2 drivers installed by Tiger. If you really want to be sure that the Tiger installed Gimp-Print drivers are removed, I would suggest that you download the Gimp-Print v5.0 beta 2 or beta 4 driver package. The uninstaller with those packages should be more likely to remove the v5.0 beta 2 drivers. You should also check your Receipts folder (/Library/Receipts) to see if the uninstall was successful. Apple has a habit of using names for the packages other than what the Gimp-Print team assigned. In the Tiger install, Apple also changed the version number of the driver package to 10.4. This causes problems when people try to upgrade to the v5.0 beta 4 version of the Gimp-Print (Gutenprint) drivers because a more recent version is found on the system.

I won't argue with success, but I am not certain of why removing the Gimp-Print drivers would/could/should make a difference. The articles you cited give no technical reason other than to say there is some sort of conflict.

I am now totally confused and regret the day I followed the Epson instructions. I do have 2 tigers loaded. My comp. was just fine right after I loaded Tiger now I seem to be having conflicts every where. I feel I should delete the one tiger system folder and uninstall tiger then reload again. I am now afraid to do anything as feel I am sinking. What would you do?

This should not be needed. The Epson drivers included on the Tiger disk are the same if not newer than those available

Like I said, I originally installed both and later realized I never needed to. I only brought it up because even my confused over-installation did not prevent the printer from working successfully.

I won't argue with success, but I am not certain of why removing the Gimp-Print drivers would/could/should make a difference. The articles you cited give no technical reason other than to say there is some sort of conflict.

Well, I did call it an obscure special case. 🙂 The symptom is that users making critical prints notice subtle errors in tonal rendering, known to be fixed by banishing the GIMP driver. High-end print users often depend on very finely tuned custom profiles which in turn depend on the other links in the chain, and the driver does control how tones are distributed through the inks. I don't have the exact technical details to explain it, but my understanding from threads on the relevant forums is that the GIMP driver handles the tone-to-ink transfer differently enough that profiles no longer work as expected, then prints don't come out right.

Further, I do wonder if you have actually removed the Gimp-Print drivers that were installed by the Tiger installation

That's a good question of course, but I made sure I was using the most recent GIMP-Print Uninstaller provided by sourceforge. There might be betas out there, but the counter-question would be, is Apple using "beta" GIMP drivers then. If they are, it would throw more, not less, suspicion on the GIMP driver.

Aug 7, 2005 6:42 PM in response to Network 23

Network 23,

The symptom is that users making critical prints notice subtle errors in tonal rendering, known to be fixed by banishing the GIMP driver.

And it is precisely that issue that would make it virtually impossible for a non-trained eye to say "Oh yes, I can see it too." I think I'll put this item on my to do list to examine more closely what files Gimp-Print and the ICC profiles install and how they may interact.

On the other hand (are we up to the third or fourth hand by now?) that there is such a problem and a solution is good information to keep in mind. The question will probably come up again.

is Apple using "beta" GIMP drivers

Yes they are. Tiger installs the Gimp-Print v5.0 beta 2 drivers by default. As I mentioned earlier, you can't tell by looking at the Receipt. It shows version 10.4 which is causing other problems. The only way to tell is to look at some of the driver listings or at the PPDs installed. The printer model names show "CUPS + Gimp-Print v5.0 beta 2" or "CUPS + Gutenprint v5.0 beta 2". I can never remember when the official name change showed up in the PPDs and package names.
