WD Passport drive just makes a clicking noise when plugged in...

It doesn't come up as a drive on the ibook...clicks...that's it...i thought it would work with my ibook...it's a usb 2.0 160gb drive...

I did connect it to my g4 tower, direct to a usb port in back and it works fine...

any ideas about how to get it to work with my ibook?

G4 450agp, Mac OS X (10.3.x), 2gb ram seritek card 2 sata drives lots of wires behind my desk...

What version of the OS is installed on the iBook?

Have you tried both USB ports?

I found I had the same problem when it was Passport drive was plugged into 4 port usb adapter on the right side. Not sure though...its intermittement (now it seems fine after unplugging and trying different combinations).

Same thing happens for me - I'm guessing the USB 1.1 ports on the iBook don't supply enough power for the drive.

You might have more luck with a firewire drive (Iomega do some cheap dual firewire/USB portable drives). - I can't test it at the moment as I've only got powered firewire drives.
