Clamxav anti virus won't let me scan hard disk

How am i supposed to find a virus if i can't scan my hard disk because it says it's a startup disk and causes problems if scanned. Any ideas what i am supposed to do. Cheers

Compaq Laptop, Mac OS X (10.5.2), Macbook 10.5.2 120 GB HDD 2GB RAM

Start from another disk, and run clam xav from there.

You can make a clone of your hard disk with Carbon Copy Cloner, then boot from that, run clam xav from that hard drive, and use it to scan your internal.
