Please i need help.
I am new to Mac and I have a Macbook Pro as well as an AirCard 580, but i can not use it as there is no PCMCIA slot. So i've now got an Elan U132 card reader but my MacBook Pro does not recognise the AirCard 580.

MacBook Pro 17", Mac OS X (10.4.11)

Hi there, ok, i read your Q, and i faced the same thing one day, but i need to know first, what is your aim? i mean what do you wanna do with this card? your MBP has only an EXPRESSCARD slot, so the only way to use any cards is to be EXPRESS CARDS, now if you wanna access the net through a 3G or even 3.5G networks (broadband) you can go ahead and look at SERRIA website for the right card for you. hope it helps.

Ok perks i got it, but here is my experience, i work in the oilfield and my nature of work keeps me on the move 24/7, so the best thing to keep my alive, is 3G broadbands cards, now the weird thing is, all apple PCs i mean notebooks in this case, DOES NOT ACCEPT THIS WAY OF COMMUNICATION via USB!! my work related toshiba LT accept it with no problems at all, in one of my business trips to saudi arabia, i got one of these cards 3G broadbands but is was via USB, my toshiba accepted it happily, but my MBP did not recognize it at all, tried so many ways but no luck at all !! bottom line is MBP will not accept any kind of networking via USB, so i think you have to try some other way or like i told you b4, try express card slot. If any one out there have a better experience, please share it with us. Thanks

Hello,

pcmcia adapters are in general not supported for 3G connections by any software I know of. You should use a USB modem for these connections - they do work very well ⚠. Vodafone carries several and a Mac software comes with it. You can buy a carrier independant modem but then you need software like this one to drive it:

I use the sierra 587e Express Card. It work awesome with no problems or issues. The only one you may have along the way is that it will need to be activated on a windows machine. After that, the card is good to go and it rocks.

It also comes with an adapter to use in a pcmcia slot so if you need to, you get the best of both worlds.

I have not found or hear of good luck using a PCMCIA to USB adapter. I know they exist, and I know the cheapest I have found one that is rated to work with aircards is about $200. (US Dollars)

You can almost buy a new express card outright for that price. That would be my recommendation if it is at all available to you. Buy the express card
