Linksys PSUS4 print server and Canon ip3000 printer

Everyone tells me Macs are just plain easy to use: I am starting to have my doubts:

I have an eMac running 10.4.2. I installed my Canon ip3000 inkjet printer and have been using it great via the USB port for the past 6 months.

I then bought a windows XP laptop and wanted to be able to print to this printer as well... so i bought a Linksys PSUS4 print server.

I configured everything correctly and was able to print wirelessly from my XP laptop to this printer (printer now connected to print server)

Now, I expected the Mac to be able to also print to this printer... But I was wrong. It seems that I need some GIMP CUPS printer driver that does not exist for the ip series of printers.

Why can't OX 10.4.2 use the already installed print drivers and just switch to sending the data to the print server?

Has anyone else had this problem? Any advice on how to get this setup working?

I used the Printer Setup utility and set up my IP Printing with the correct IP address etc....

Great question.
Canon (and all non-postscript printer manufacturers except Brother) does not provide drivers that can use all the other comm protocols that OS X and CUPS can use, because it was easier for them to use the legacy OS-9 style single-comm driver. I think it's fair to say Apple didn't help, because it didn't remove that possibility. In addition, Canon doesn't help the open source community, so no one has come up with free CUPS drivers (like Gimp-Print) for Canons newer than 6 years old.

You can buy an excellent CUPS driver from www.printfab.net. Then you can use all the OS X network protocols.

When you set up your IP printing, don't forget to enter the linksys-specific queue name in the setup - it's a part of the address that gets data to the printer.

Hope this helps.

Printer is a Canon MP780, drivers have been installed on mac. linksys folks say i need to port the device.
