Just bought new I-Book G4 and new HP 1320 printer. Will not print. States it is printing but states "jobs stopped". I've deleted printer and added it again. Also reloaded drives from the 10.4.2 system disc. Even used reset printers option. No luck. HP support says to use the drivers in Tiger 10.4.2 version. Help!

When you try to print something, an application that handles your printer's tasks should launch. If, for some reason (like an error message about paper) pops up, the application will switch the status of your printer to stopped so that you can fix it. All you should have to do is go into that applicaion (in the dock) and click "start jobs" in the toolbar.
I tried your suggestion , no success. When I tell it to start printing it states it making a connection then comes up with the "jobs stopped". I know the printer works with a I-Book G3 running 10.2.8. Any other ideas out there?
Mark,
I had the same experience when I bought a new HP LaserJet 1320 and installed the HP driver on my PowerMac before trying to use it (see my post at Ryan Galt, "Cannot figure out how to print duplex with HP LaserJet 1320" #5, 04:46pm Oct 4, 2005 CDT).
After everything I described there, in addition to my new idea for a solution which was manually deleting the files installed by the HP driver installed, I still cannot print to the HP 1320 directly from my PowerMac. Actually, I would not recommend deleting the files manually, since now my PowerMac cannot even see the HP 1320. Interestingly, it sees my other printer, an Epson inkjet, just fine.
I have worked out an interim solution. I can print to the HP 1320 from my PowerMac using my iBook G3 as a print server. This requires for the two to be on the same network, the iBook to be plugged directly into the 1320 (mine is the USB only model), and for the iBook to have Printer Sharing on (under Sharing in System Preferences). This actually works very well, and I can access all of the driver settings from my PowerMac.
Since it still works on my iBook using the open source HP driver for OS X, HPIJS <http://www.linuxprinting.org/macosx/hpijs/>, I would recommend trying to install that (make sure you install ESP Gostscript first, on the same site). I suspect, however, that the HP factory driver has "permanently" made it so you cannot print from your iBook G4 until you reinstall Tiger (I'm sure there is a way to fix it, but it is beyond me), so even installing the HPIJS driver might not help.
For me, I am going to reinstall Tiger on my PowerMac since I have found no other solution out there (if anyone has one, please let me know). After reinstalling Tiger, I will NOT install the HP driver software that came with the HP 1320. Instead I am going to use the driver that is pre-installed on Tiger to print at first, and then install the HPIJS driver that works so well on my iBook. I will let you know if that works.

Ryan,
I did find a successful way to get the HP 1320 to print. I went into the Library and remove the following extension to the trash.
<hp LaserJet_1320series.kext>
I then performed a restart without the printer connected. After boot-up I reconnected the printer and the correct printer appeared in the printer list and actually worked. I did get this suggestion from Apple support after they denied support for the HP 1320. I referred them to an article they released stating support. After that they offered me that solution. It sure beats reloading Tiger. Good-luck

Mark,
Thanks for posting that advice. That is great to know. I spent all day backing up and reinstalling Tiger, but I "wanted" to do it anyway since I did a dirty install over Panther. It does seem zippier now, but maybe it is just me trying to be optimistic.
The good news is that printing works great for me - duplexing and all, just using the preinstalled driver from OS X, "hp LaserJet 1320 series." I didn't have to install the open source driver, though I might later just to compare output qualities.
My advice to others out there on the HP LaserJet 1320: it is an awesome duplexing printer so far, just DON'T install the HP drivers. Use Tiger's native ones.

I had the same problem with my out of the box hp laserjet 1320. HP Support suggested the following and it worked. See below, hope it helps.

We understand from your e-mail that attempting to print to the HP LaserJet 1320 from Macintosh OS 10.4.2 is resulting in a jobs stopped message. A reinstall of the driver has been done, but the issue remains. As well, the LaserJet 1320 is not appearing on a list of supported printers.
This issue has been observed before with OS 10.4 and this printer, and is most likely due to the HP Toolbox being installed on the computer. We recommend using the following steps to remove this software from the computer and then to setup the printer.
1. Run the uninstall program included in the HP Toolbox installer:
a. Double-click on the installer file.
b. Enter the user name a password and click OK.
c. If you accept the license agreement, click Accept.
d. Click Easy Install and then click Uninstall.
e. Click the word Uninstall that appears in the bottom right.
f. Click Continue.
g. Click Ok.
h. Click Ok.
2. Manually uninstall any remaining Toolbox files:
a. Double-click on the hard drive icon, by default labeled Macintosh HD.

Hi,
I tried your method after reading your kind post.
Unfortunately my problem was still standing in front of me. Probably I did something wrong.
Luckily enough, the timely OS update (10.4.3) solved my problem: now it is printing perfectly. Tes, duplexing, too!
I'm 100% positive that the Update did something: I didn't modify any setting before the Update. And before the Update, I confirmed error twice.
Good luck everyone.

I had experienced the same problem with hp1320. Luckily, I could fix it by following Rockey's instructions.
Thanks!
Thanks!
Afternoon all,
I have been reading few posts about problems with the HP LaserJet 1320 and printing duplex, etc.
Does anyone know if these issues have been resolved with OSX 10.4.3?
We are thinking about purchasing a 1320 and would like to make sure it works.
Thanks,
Walt

I just brought home the LaserJet 1320 to use with my iMac running OS X 10.4.3 (Tiger). The 1320 works just fine with the pre-installed driver, including duplex printing, both with and without AirPort.
I've read in various threads that the HP Toolbox is incompatible with OS X 10.4.x -- does anyone know for sure if that's true?
I haven't yet installed anything from the CD that came with the printer. Am I missing out on any important functions for the 1320 by not installing the HP Toobox? HP's website says that the driver built into Tiger OS allows "print only" support -- whatever that means.

"print only" means that scanner and FAX are not supported in non-Windows. I do not know if the copier facility needs computer support, i.e. if it is possible to be used without connected computer.
I think the remark is meant for multi function printers (i.e. "AIO") only.

I have the same problem with this thing. Brand new HP1320n. I see that people have tried various things. But, man, I want a printer that works. Just works. I don't have time for this crapola. I am going to stuff this printer back in the box and send it back. I am done with HP. (Long story). My new question is this: What is a similar printer to the HP1320n that will not give me these hassles and work right out of the box?
If all you need is a monochrome, networked, laser printer to do text and very light graphics, then a Brother HL2070N should be on your list. List price is $200, but I got mine for $135. It's fast, it works with Macs and Windows boxes, and it's easily set up. (I had the printer available for my home net, both Macs and Windows machines, within ten minutes of opening the box. And most of that was spent running around the house with the install CD.)
Warning: this is not the printer for heavy-duty graphics work. And it does PCL, not PostScript. (Which is one reason why serious graphics and it do not mix.) I print graphics on my HP or Epson inkjets. Everything else goes to the Brother.

Yeah, well might print some graphics. We paid near $5bills for this thing:

I'd go with the best and most compatible rig that matches this price range. This boat anchor is headed back though.
Any suggestions in that range?

Yeah, well might print some graphics.
A Minolta 2450 might be what you want, then. Costs $600-700 or so, prints colour. You can even print pictures with it. It does PostScript. It's the cheapest colour PostScript printer I know of. It connects via either Ethernet or USB.

The Minolta 2430 is about $200 less than the 2450, and doesn't do PostScript. It does deliver good graphics.
