To check on RAM prices, try a website like:

RAM stands for Random Access Memory, and serves as a memory for your computer. In the case of the Macbook, RAM is used by the main processor and the video chipset as well.

Generally speaking, more RAM means better performance, but this will depend on what applications you plan to use, how many applications you keep open at once, and so forth.

If you bought your Macbook in Late 2007 (i.e. it has an intel Core 2 Duo, not just a Core Duo processor), you can upgrade to 4GB, however you may not need all 4GB.

It depends on what type of programs you use, if you use programs that use a lot of memory, and you use them along with other software at the same time, you may need 4GB. I only have 2GB, as I have the original macbook, and I find no problems, that's running programs like Aperture, Parallels, and various windows programs which are very demanding.

While you are working on your computer, go to your Activity Monitor, and go to System Memory, if you still have a fair amount free, you may not need any more, but if you don't, then you need more ram. Also, your page ins should be much higher than page outs. So it's really up to you how much you think you need.
