Trying to minimize causes freezing

I've had a lot of problems with my computer lately, but I just now figured out what triggers at least some of them.

Anytime I try to minimize a program or document (either by double-clicking or hitting the yellow button in the corner), the program suddenly becomes unresponsive. No beachball of death, it just freezes up and ignores everything I try to do. The entire dock also becomes unresponsive, and I can't force quit the program. Eventually, I just have to do a hard reset.

My system preferences are marked to minimize when I double click the window. Is there any idea what this means, or how I can fix it?

MacBook, Mac OS X (10.5.2)

There can be quite a few things that can cause this issue. Couple of questions that might help narrow down the issue.... Does it happen in a new user? So if you create a completely fresh test user then does this same issue occur there? and have you tried a disk utility's repair disk from the installation DVD up to this point?

Yes, the same problem occurs if I create a new user. And I have tried Disk Utility, but it couldn't find anything wrong. I even tried TechTool Pro, but it would get stuck about halfway into maitanance.

Don't know if it's related, but a few programs are also shutting down while I'm performing normal tasks, like iTunes when I play a video, or iPhoto when I import any photos. These also occur in the test user.

I also removed the preference lists for everything (system preferences, iTunes and iPhoto), with no luck. Any ideas? I'm really stumped.

Well if it's happening in the new user as well then it looks to be system wide. Pulling preferences and things like that in the home folder won't solve much. At this point I recommend doing an archive and install while preserving the user and network settings. This should resolve your issue. Hope this helps

That's exactly what I ended up doing. I downgraded to Tiger, since I didn't have my Leopard DVD, and I suspect that it was part of the problem in the first place, but at least everything's working properly again. Thanks for all your help!
