Deleting Norton Antivirus

I (regrettably) installed Norton on my my macbook. When I realized that I had no use for it I deleted all of the files I could find on the HD and using spotlight. Now, it tells me autoprotect is still running and when I tried to delete it my moving to the trash can, it won't let me empty it from the trash because it us in use. I can't get it it to quit! I went to the symantec site to download the uninstall program but when I open it a window with a bunch of random characters opens.
How do I quit and delete autoprotect?! it's running unnecessary processes and I'd like it to be gone!

macbook, Mac OS X (10.5.2)

There is an uninstall utility you can run to solve the problem. However, you may have to reinstall the application in order for the utility to work properly. If you go to their website they have very detailed instructions for deleting the files manually.

FYI, If you download files and send them on to PC friends then it might be a good idea to have some sort of AntiVirus software to prevent from spreading a virus on to them.

I use Norton AntiVirus on Leopard and it works great for me.

I have deleted all of the norton files from my computer EXCEPT autoprotect. I really had to dig around to find it and it's not in the system preferences of programs that automatically run when I turn my computer on. I can't get it to delete because it's telling me that it can't remove files in use. I can't figure out how to quit it, so I can't delete it. I might just reinstall it and then uninstall it when I have some time.
