Help! iPod Classic stuck in hold switch mode!

Hi,
I got a new iPod Classic 80 GB this past week. It works great, except today its stuck in the hold switch mode (shows the lock in the upper left corner), even when the hold switch is not toggled. I've tried restoring the ipod, but nothing works. How can i fix this?

Emachines Laptop and a Power Mac G3 266MHz, Mac OS X (10.1.x)

Nope, it won't even reset. I think if i completely format/re-partition it, it would work, but would I still be able to get the iPod software back on? I'd like to avoid going to the Genius Bar if at all possible.

hold switch is for locking keys. it is there for 2 reasons. One, to prevent you accidentally cranking volume or anything while listening. Second, it cuts off power flowing from battery to touch pad. This saves battery power.

Try the following:

Switch it into HOLD
Switch it OFF
Hold Menu & Select until the iPod resets (Even if it's in HOLD mode, it will reset)

Is it still on HOLD?

The way I fixed this problem was by actually opening up the ipod and fixing it. Or take it to an apple store.

Have you tried letting it die by not charging it? Eventually it will shut off, you can put the hold switch in the off position, and then sync/restore ...

Or take it in to an Apple Store ...

Can some tell me what the HOLD switch is for on the iPod 30gb video? I have never used it.

what's the best way to do that? i'm afraid of hitting something and screwing it up. i'd bring it to the store but its out of the warranty.
