iMac Freezing

Hi there,

I have one of the older (first gen 24" intel) iMacs. Its been fine until recently.

However, it now occasionally locks up (once 3 times in a day) and over the past week I'd say its occurred about 7-10 times.. The freezing seems to come about shortly after I notice some gfx glitches.

The problem seems to arise after running a movie or flash movie.

I had noticed a similar issue before whilst playing World of Warcraft, a problem solved by running smc fan control and setting the fans to run at a high rpm. I suspect the problem is gfx kernel panic related. However, I dont wish to run the fans at full pelt all the time as it will shorten their lifespan and its hardly a decent solution.

Can anyone offer any help?

Thanks..

iMac 24", Mac OS X (10.5.2)

wait a minute, weren't you the one who said i was being paranoid because apple deleted my posts? oh yeah, here it is:

Yep, that was me, and yep I think you're paranoid. You equated apple deleting your post with "apple not wanting word to get out about this". That's paranoid. Just like I said in the linked post, if apple didn't want word to get our about this they'd just delete the whole thread. Stop being paranoid.

I never suggested apple doesn't delete posts, they do. It just happened to me. Forums are moderated by humans who have to decide what to delete and what to allow to stay. 99.99999% of the time those decisions are based on violations of the TOS, not because of some grand conspiracy to "keep word from getting out about this". Your reaction was paranoid. Mine was factual: Apple deleted my post, despite the fact that it directly answered another posters questions. I don't think there was any conspiracy to stifle information involved at all, I just worded the post in such a way that some moderator didn't see it as helpful so they deleted it. I since reposted the exact same info in a different format and the post is still there.

So just like I said before... stop being paranoid.

i'm not paranoid. apple does not want word to spread about this problem so users can organize. why else would they delete posts that mention certain key words or links? they know that as long as they keep it contained here, they can control the content.

btw, i'm smiling right now because you bought a new video card, replaced it, and managed to make your imac even worse than it was before. nice!

LOL Your first two sentences are spectacular: First you say you're not paranoid, then you make a statement that absolutely defines paranoia. Hilarious!

You are in fact engaging in prototypical paranoid behavior: Denying that you're paranoid while actively believing that some large, vague entity is trying to stifle your opinions or ideas. If you don't think that's paranoia then you don't understand what the word means.

I'm happy to give you a brief respite from your paranoia 🙂 While you're chuckling, please bear in mind that the problem I'm having now is purely a connectivity issue, there's a bad connection between my new graphics card and the motherboard, likely I just need to clean the connectors. When it is working I have not even a single one of the issues that I had before replacing the card.

It's not the motherboard. It's the graphics card. Period.

it's not paranoia if it's true. anyway, thanks for replying to my posts and keeping this topic bumped to the top. you're clearly smarter than the rest of us, so please continue to keep us posted on your repair job and connectivity issues.

Thing is, you have no way of knowing it's true. Evidence suggests you're being paranoid, if apple was committed to keeping this problem "quiet" wouldn't they just delete this whole thread?

I don't know about smart, but I like to argue 🙂 If I can get my imac up and running again I'll be sure to let everyone know.

Who cares? Lets talk about the topic: Late 2006 iMac Freezing, pixels, horizontal lines, beachballs, etc. possibly due to a large batch of defective Logic Boards.

Stop arguing with each other. Where can we move this thread to? Does anyone have a blog or website? We can gather up all the threads discussing this issue, there are multiple (this is just the most popular). How can we all contact each other? Lets discuss these issues.

I see a bunch of divide and conquer on here rather than working together.

Here is another thread from a forum about this issue I didn't post before:

zach, i can't post the links here, but there have been some online pttions started re this matter. i'm sure you can find them if you look around a little. there's really not much else to discuss re the problem. we just need to figure out a way to organize as a collective party and force apple to do something about it. unfortunately, the only way may be through legal channels.

That is what I mean. There is no way for us to coordinate on these forums because we can't contact anyone who has posted here. If there was some blog/forum/website that we could all create accounts on and share our contact information (i.e. email) we could organize but as long as we stay on these boards we can't organize.

Look back through all these posts at the individuals who have reported this problem. We can't contact them unless they look back here at some point.

What good does an online petition do? I guess peoples names and contact are there but...

I know a forum but I'm not sure that the mods there would want me taking it over with this issue.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but when you click on someone's screen name their profile shows up. If people put their email addresses in there you could contact them no problem right?

This is true. A petition, yay. Right up there with a class action filing. Big deal, so I can get $18 five years from now? Thanks, I'll pass.

So after the "new" (actually I'm 99% sure it was a used) video card I installed stopped working completely, showing only garbled gray screen on startup, I re-installed the original video card in my imac.

It started up just fine. I went to Hulu, brought up an episode of The Office, put it on hi res and entered full screen mode. After just about two seconds garbled graphics lines showed up and then everything simply froze.

During the brief few days that the "new" graphics card was working I was able to run hulu, youtube, a DVD, a video in iTunes and google earth simultaneously with no problems. Now, with the original graphics card installed the computer freezes when simply watching a video in full screen mode.

This leaves the question: Was the "new" graphics card fritzed on arrival? Or did my motherboard fry it? It seems unlikely to the point of impossible to me that my motherboard completely destroyed the "new" graphics card. Much more likely is that the card came from a used computer and itself was fried before I even got it.

In any case I've requested a replacement card from welovemacs.com we'll see if they step up and do the right thing or not. If not, I'm back to square one: Have to turn off quartz extreme and just forget about watching any video content on my $2k imac if I want it to function at even a basic level.
