How do I expand compressed files?

This subject isn't covered in Mac Help or via a search here on the Discussion Board. Am I the only person who can't figure out how to expand a compressed file that I receive as an email attachment/download? If I recall correctly, way back in the old days of Mac, all you had to do was double-click a zipped attachment and it opened automatically (revealed the uncompressed files). Do I have to download and install Stuffit? I'm surprised no "decompression" software comes on the new Macs, since that was always standard years ago and since it was such a time saver. I downloaded a new printer driver that is a .sit file, but when I double click it, all I see is code. Also, why isn't this topic covered in the help menus--it tells you how to compress files, but not how to decompress files that you download or receive. Am I using the wrong terminology? Decompress? Uncompress? Expand? Am I hallucinating that Mac used to do this automatically?

Susan,

Mac OS X 10.4, 10.5: Where is StuffIt Expander?
Allume StuffIt Expander doesn't come with Mac OS X 10.4 or later.

However, Mac OS X 10.4 and Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard or later let you compress and decompress archive (.zip) files that work with both Mac OS X and Microsoft Windows.

If you'd like to use StuffIt Expander too, for example, to open .sit or .sitx compressed files, you can download it from the Allume Systems website.

Leopard can handle .zip compression natively. It does not handle every form of compression available.

The .sit file you have was created by Stuffit Deluxe. For many years Stuffit was the standard for file compression on the Mac, and it's still being used by many users today.

You can download the free Stuffit Expander from here:

Hello, other Susan,

Honestly, I had given up and installed the printer driver (the compressed file I had downloaded and couldn't expand) from an old disk instead. But then I received the Stuffit Expander suggestion and downloaded and installed THAT for future use. Since my printer driver problem was already solved, I hadn't actually unstuffed a file with it until now (figured I owed you some feedback on your question).

First, I went to my Applications Folder where the new Stuffit Expander was installed. I dragged the SE icon down into my dock (icon looks like a cardboard box with a white arrow in it). Then I dragged the compressed file out of my Downloads folder (that sits down by my Trash can) and into the "cardboard box" icon. Poof! The trouble was, I didn't know where the expanded file had parked itself. Fortunately, my husband was looking over my shoulder and advised me to look for it in that Downloads folder (he said it would appear next to the compressed file). There it was.

It appears to have expanded that compressed printer driver just fine.

My husband uses SE a lot, and he suggests you trash your Stuffit Expander download and go back to Alladin.com and download it again.

I agree, those numbered error messages are about the most useless thing ever.

I hope this helps and that it works for you. Unfortunately, I rarely need SE and so I am not an expert on it. But someone on this board will surely have a different solution if the new download fails to work for you. Good luck.
