Movies wont add to the iTunes Library

I'm have the same problem.

Only movies purchased from the I Tunes store will add (you find them under music originally then the subfolders movies, tv, etc etc. If you put them in the folder anyway and then open the folder in its original location (not with your ITunes player) they will show up but they will play on the original player..windows etc.

Mine should be in the right format.I rented a movie from itunes to check this whole thing out. It downloaded and is sitting in the rental folder. If I click on it is will let me play it (I haven't done it yet so I still have 28 days left).

The problem is that I can't add it to my nano. It won'd let me drag it anywhere and is not in my list for synching it. I just stuck now. My nano is video capable.

That's not correct. They don't have to be purchased movies to go into iTunes!
Just so you know -

I have a digital camera that has a movie feature, and I can put those movies into iTunes without any problems. They are in .MOV format.

The only other reasons I can think of is, the operating system somehow has a lock on it, so iTunes can't add it. Vista is notorious for weirding out file permissions.

How to Disable UAC
Click Start/ type in the Search bar msconfig without quotes and hit ENTER... In the System Configuration window that will pop-up, select the TOOLS Tab. Scroll down the list and look for Disable UAC. Select it and click launch. Close all open windows and reboot...

Also, are the movies on a SATA drive, or is it IDE?

How big is the file? Maybe you're exceeding the space on your nano. I put videos on my iPod Classic. I rip DVDs with programs I purchased. The ripped files are usually 400-600Mb. If you have a lot of music or other files maybe you're out of space.

It's not a huge file and I have tons of space left on my nano.

I also don't have vista, I have XP.

This is frustrating...I was so excited to see what the new nanos could do and basically what I have is a more square version of my old one.

gamer4250, did you get it fixed by chaging Vista permissions?

I did think of something else to try. See if it will play in QuickTime.

iTunes uses QT codecs to play movies. Maybe QT will give some kind of error message, whereas iTunes just sits there and makes you angry with its silence....
