Maximum Length of Ethernet Cable?

Anyone know what the maximum length for an ethernet connection is? I am at the edge of effective airport range, and keep dropping out. The router is at the opposite end of the house from where I use my MacBook. I've tried range extenders (Hawking and Lynksis), but because I am not yet network savvy, I've given up on those. The distance I need to cover is about 50ft. Additionally, the router is upstairs, and I am downstairs. Can I run an enthernet wire that far? (I guess I can do whatever I want, but will it work?)

Macbook 13" (early 2008), Mac OS X (10.5.2), 2 meg, 2GB RAM, 120GB HD; IPod, 80GB
