What is "native mode"

I'm buying a scanner (for Christmas) and see some scanner run on Mac OS in "native mode."
What does this mean?
And can I buy scanners that my machine (iMac G5. OSX 10.4.2) can run without installing new drivers?

unless i miss my guess, i believe native means that it runs in OS X without the need to use classic or new drivers.

I remember in pre OSX that if an application was native to an OS that it meant that it was designed to work in that OS.
