Using the printer's scanner via Time Capsule???

Hi everyone. I've got the following problem: can I have my printer's scanner working via Time Capusle. I know that I can print via Time Capsule's USB port (I know that this port is only for printing, nothing else), but what about scanning??? Will it work when I connect my HP Photosmart C5180 to the ethernet port in my Time Capsule. On their website Apple says that ethernet ports are for sharing network devices. I'm sure that my all-in-one device has got this feature, cause it has got on the back the ethernet port... Waiting for your answers

Oh yes, it's very annoying. Would it be better if you would leave your printer conncted directly to your Mac and switch on the sharing of it in the sharing preferences???

P.S. Apple should add the feature of scanning and printing via Time Capsule USB or ethernet port. Does anybody know if this could be add as a feature to Time Capsule via firmware update???

From my previous post.

I've should have mentioned that if you connect your printer to Time Capsule via Ethernet you must go to system pref./printer and fax and add the printer. This should give you the ability to print. As far as using the scanner wirelessly with its associated software, won't happen. This is not supported.

If you want to prove this to yourself, attach the printer to your TC. Set it up so that Bonjour can see it over your network. Launch your printer Scanner software and you'll will see if it finds the printer or not. I'm 100% sure it won't.

So... I've connected my HP C5180 printer to time capsule via ethernet cable to my Time Capsule and... NOTHING (as a scanner). It print, but it doesn't scan... In the printer & fax preferences I click the "+" button and than I saw the window in which I had to select the printer. I had there two printers (in fact one). One was shown as Bonjour and the second as HP IP... No matter which I choose both doesn't scan. When I've opened the HP Scan Pro.app or the printer queue the following messages popped up: this printer doesn't support scanning feature. Please select one which supports this feature or the second message: no printer selected. Select one...

Can someone tell me what am I doing wrong???

First I would do this...
In the Print & Fax, add new printer.
Choose More Printers and then HP IP and use Manual address.
Enter the address of your printer. You can find this out by printing the setup from your printer.

If the above does not work, try this

1. Uninstall "Everything HP" using the HP uninstaller.
2. Restart your computer
3. Install the newest software you have for your HP
4. Restart your computer
5. In the Print & Fax preference add a new printer.

I tried everything and it still doesn'r work... I've done as you said. I've entered the IP address in HP IP, but the "connect" button was inaccessible to click. I look for some similar problems on the net and I find out what's the problem.

In that thread the man chas_m says: generally, the answer is no. I've seen a few VERY SPECIFIC models that advertised this function, but if it wasn't the main selling point of the machine then the answer is almost certainly "no, that won't work."

Then I've looked for capabilities of your printer on amazon.com and what I found...

Share your all-in-one with up to 5 computers using built-in networking and wireless capabilities. You will also enjoy wireless printing and scanning plus access to built-in memory card slots.

The point is that my printer doesn't have this feature. Yes, it has got the ethernet port, but it's only for printing.

P.S. It's sad, but I've to live with it...:-)

I have your same problem.

I have a brother mcf-240c multifunction printer (+scanner, etc)

The printer works flawlessly with my time capsule (os x 10.5) but the scanner does not....

If anyone knows how to make it work ....

Thanks in advance...

ps: Obviously everything worked perfect before when it was connected directly to my iMac with the USB port
