Using sustain pedal with garageband

I have a M-Audio Keystation 61 es that I use with garageband and an M-Gear sustain pedal. However, when i plug in the pedal and open garageband the pedal only works some of the time and most of the time does nothing. Is there any reason that this could be happening or something I can change in garageband to make it work all the time?
