Apacer USB thumb drive not working

Hi all,

I've just purchased an Apacer 256 megabyte USB thumb drive and I am having problems getting it to work with my computers. When I place it into my PowerBook, the drive won't mount in the sidebar. I have opened 'Disk Utility' and there is no mention of the drive in there.

I have also stuck the drive into a Dell PC and I am receiving the following message:

'USB Device Not Recognized - One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognize it. For assistance in solving this problem, click this message'.

Any help greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
Stu 🙂

That sounds as though either the Windows message means it and the drive is faulty, or it needs drivers or special utilities installing for both OSÂ…

What looked like Apacer's pages at http://www.apacer.com/en/products/USBFlashDrives.htm didn't list quite that description, thoughÂ… is Apacer 256 megabyte USB thumb drive its full name, please?

I have one apacer USMB thumb drive 128MB. Initially it mounts on both PC/window and my iBOOK G4 running Tiger. But 2 weeks ago, it didnt mount on my iBOOK but mounted on PC/window XP with some odd behaviour when I tried to copy it to the PC HD. At last, I reformat it on PC machine but I lost all my data in it 😟.
Now it mount back on my iBOOK.
You can do the same to your thumb drive....

Hi Robbie,

Thank you very much for your reply. The drive is an 'Apacer HN202 256MB YSB2.0 Handy Drive'. It's long, rectangular and made of a silver metal (just incase that helps). The drive didn't come with any CDs or disks for installing drivers. I was under the impression that USB thumb drives don't require drivers from Windows ME and up (I am running Windows XP).

Is there any way that I can access the drive to format it using Windows XP even though I'm getting the device error message?

Thanks heaps,
Stu 🙂
