Unknown Error Message 1434

My 80 GB classic just shut down on me and told me i need to restore it using iTunes, yet everytime i plug it into iTunes and try to restore it, it tells me it failed because of Unknown Error 1434, and it claims my ipod is named "Ipod" when in fact it is not. i've tried resetting it and trying again, i have the latest version of iTunes, i have gone into Diagnostics and found an error on the IO > Hard Drive > HDSMARTData category, but now i have no idea what to do about it. Please help me!

Firstly, welcome to the Forum Sean!

Plug the iPod in but this time don't launch iTunes (or quit it if it launches). Go to Applications>Utilities and launch Disk Utility, select the iPod and run the repair disk routine. Post back.

I have exactly the same problem with my iPod Classic 80gb.
When I open the Disk Utility it shows me a 16TB iPod, what would be pretty cool, but (obviously) isn't true. Partitioning won't work.

I ran the HDD diagnosis, but it halts everytime. I assume the HDD is broken/lost connectivity or whatever.

I know this forum is for technical support, but will Apple, or the vendor, exchange the iPod for a new device or at least repair it?

Same problem here.

iPod classic 80GB. When using Windows disk tools message: "disk locked" or "disk read-only". Mac Disk Utility says: "Input/output error". iTunes reboots iPod after reset and keep coming up with same message: "blah, blah in recovery mode ...".

Apple says "no warranty; user abuse" because it probably is a broken harddrive. This iPod has never been dropped, and looks better than when it came out of the store!

Help!

I am having the error 1434 problem with a 80GB iPod as well. The disk is showing in Disk Utility as a "8.0KB Apple Ipod Media". The repair disk function is unavailable. Attempting to erase the disk results in the error message "Disk Erase failed with the error: The chosen size is not valid for the chosen filesystem"

I've been having this same problem but now itunes wont even notice my ipod although the computer will, and my ipod will randomly restart itself if i have it on for too long. Plus it has about 20something gigs taken up but there is absolutely nothing on my ipod. Should i send it in, am i still under warranty if i bought it in january, but i didnt buy the extended warranty?

Thanks!

Hi all,

I have the same error 1434 on my iPod 80GB. Before it started giving me that error, i tried to restore it, but iTunes could not recognise the iPod after trying to install the upgraded software. Then little click sounds started to appear, followed by a big click sound coming from (unmistakably) the hard disk.

After that, it gave me the Error 1434. Running the iPod in Diagnose mode (pressing buttons Menu+Select and then Previous+Select) it gave me an error while trying to test the HD.

So my error 1434 seems to be related to a defective hard disk. Hope that helps.

Any ideas? I guess I ran out of them, so I'll take it to the Apple Store, once I'm back in NY.
