How to copy files using Terminal?

Hi all!

Would anyone be able to give me detailed instructions on how to copy a folder from my hard disk to a usb flash disk via terminal? I'm not even sure on how to mount the usb disk...
(My system won't start (see post http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=6934894 if interested)).

Or is it possible to copy these when booting from the cd?

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

USB drives mount automatically when they are plugged in to the computer. The Unix command to copy a file or folder is "cp". From the Terminal prompt enter "man cp" to display the help documentation for the command.

You can use the Terminal from the Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Terminal from the Utilities menu.
