can't get AVCHD .mts files from external drive into FCP6.02 Log & transfer

Hi All,
I can't get AVCHD .mts files from an external drive WD FireWire HD into the Final Cut 6.02 Log and transfer.

I just installed Final Cut Suite 2 and updated to Final Cut Pro 6.02 for the sole purpose of aquiring a large number (over 15 hours with more coming) of AVCHD .mts files recorded with a Canon HG10 hard drive camcorder that creates its AVCHD with a .mts extension. (some recorded on the medium quality setting, some recorded on high)

I cannot drop the individual files where 'Log and transfer' says; "Drag media here." and when I navigate to the individual .mts files I want from the "Add Folder" Icon in the upper left hand corner, the .mts files are grayed out and I cannot select them. When I try to select the folder they are in or one of the folders in the directory structure they come off the Camcorders hard drive in, I get the Final Cut "Warning" message:
"'whatever file or folder' contains unsupported media or has an invalid directory structure. Please choose a folder whose directory structure matches supported media."

My computer is an 20" imac 2.1 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 1 gig of RAM. Its not possible that because I don't have 2 gigs of ram, the application will not let me touch these files is it? I know it wants 2-4 gigs?

Is it possible FCP6.02 will only take these files directly from the Camcorder. That would be crazy. My Camera-person goes out and shoots on-location. He goes home and needs to immediately off-load video files from the limited hard drive to be ready for the next days shooting. He does not have FCP6.02 so he off-loads the files to a Firewire HD and gives the Drive to me, the FCP6.02 editor when convenient. Now his operating system is XP. Can that be the problem with MTS and a standard FW Hard Drive?

imac 2.16 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, Mac OS X (10.4.11), Final Cut Suite 2
