Disable disk usage

Despite having UNCHECKED the enable disk usage option and then clicking apply, my iPod shuffle continues to show up on the desktop. I have done a total restore and the issue remains. Any solutions?

Deselecting the option "Enable disk use" does not prevent the iPod shuffle from being mounted as a volume. It only sets some flag which will prompt iTunes to unmount it again (after synchronization) - which will only work if iTunes is running in the first place.

If you want to ensure that your iPod shuffle is automatically unmounted after connecting it, you additionally need to select the option "Open iTunes when this iPod is connected".

Hmm...that makes no sense at all. Disabling the "Enable disk usage" should prevent the iPod shuffle from being mounted as a volume on the Mac desktop. In fact, this is exactly what happens in other iPods that allows disk usage.

And in fact, it is working now. What I did was

1. I re-enabled disk usage.
2. Shifted the disk use bar to something (anything other than zero)
3. Re-applied the settings.
4. Then shift back the disk use bar to zero.
5. Uncheck the disk usage option.
6. Then re-applied the settings.

And now it's working. The iPod shuffle NO LONGER mounts on the desktop. Exactly the way it should be with my settings.

That's right, but the iPod shuffle is a much simpler design than the bigger iPods, and apparently does not support this. In my experience, the iPod shuffle is generally mounted as a volume whenever it is connected. It also seems that iTunes requires the iPod shuffle to be mounted in order to synchronize it. iTunes will automatically unmount it after synchronization if disk use is disabled, but temporarily mount it again each time it needs to resynchronize it later.

I'm afraid that you may be mistaken. Please try the following:

- Quit iTunes.
- Open a Finder window (with the sidebar showing the volumes).
- Now connect your iPod shuffle and wait about 10 seconds.
- The iPod volume should appear in the side bar (and on the desktop).
- The iPod shuffle's LED will be blinking yellow because it is mounted.
- Now start iTunes, which will synchronize the iPod.
- Afterwards the iPod volume will disappear.
- At this time the iPod shuffle's LED will turn to steady yellow or green.
- Arrange windows so that you see both iTunes and the Finder window.
- Select the iPod shuffle in iTunes under Devices.
- Change anything, e.g. drag one song to a different position.
- This will cause iTunes to synchronize the iPod shuffle again.
- While this happens the iPod volume will temporarily reappear.
