Updating Firmware?

My MB has been working fine. Is it necessary to do the firmware update? My current version is MB31.008D.B00 I bought my Mb in late 2007. Also in the instructions for the update it says to hold down the the power button until the power indicator light flashes, what is the power indicator light? Thank you, lgbk
