Tascam FW 1884 solution...

Hi guys, this may or may not help for those of you with issues with the Tascam FW1884 Mixing desk/control surface/audio interface.

I use mine for my live stage show, so I need it to be as reliable as possible.

I went down the whole route under 10.4 of 'downgrading' my firewire (as it said to on the Tascam Website) and all that nonsense... but under leopard it seems to switch on and connect 90% of the time.

There is still the issue under Logic 8 of the bank lights not working correctly (only bank 1 led ever shows) but I read in the 1.6.0 tascam Mac OSx driver that this will be fixed in a later version.

The problems I was having with the desk this time around was when switching back from editing an EXs intrument or Midi in the piano roll to the main arrange window, the play light would stop working, the mute led's wouldn't light up, and bizarrly the audio meter levels in logic itself failed to register noise, eventhough the track played correctly. I've still no idea what this is, or what causes it, but low and behold it started doing it when the desk wasn't even plugged in!

My all time problem however, has been when changing one of the rotary encoders to change an effect, instead of pan, Logic suddenly groups banks in tracks numbering 9 or 10, instead of 8. Which means when you switch banks on the desk, you get tracks 1 - 8 on the first bank, and then something like tracks 11 - 18 on the second bank, and you can't actually access tracks 9 and 10 on the desk at all!

Well yesterday I stumbled on a solution to this...

Basically, I went to preferences, control surface, setup, and actually went to add a new Tascam FW1884. Logic added a new interface, Tascam FW1884 #2 alongside the original image. I then clicked across frmo one to the other and tried to look for differences, but couldn't find any.
I then deleted the new #2 I'd created, and low and behold, the original went back to fader banks of 8, and all my encoders still functioned the way I'd set them up!

So hope this helps with similar problems, I've no idea why it worked, maybe it just made the driver refresh or something.

Let me know if you have similar problems...

Cheers

ALSO...

Once you've configured the tascam desk the way you wanted, you can actually go to Users/Library/Preferences/ and there is a Logic Control Surface preferances file, which has all the data of your surface.

Just back this up, then whenever your surface resets itself (i.e. if Logic crashes) you just drop this file back in the Preferences folder, and everythings back to the way you want it.

Brilliant.
