Adaptec 2930 SCSI Card Problem

I've been using an Adaptec Power Domain 2930 to connect my SCSI film scanner (a Minolta Dimage Scan Elite f-2900) to my Quicksilver G4. (VueScan, not Minolta, software.)

The scanner is my only SCSI device - no internal drives or daisy chain. I leave the SCSI cable connected to the PCI card at all times, but I don't normally turn on the scanner before booting except when I know I'll be using it, which is not often.

This combination has been working pretty good for several years, then began having occasional issues waking from sleep only when the SCSI scanner is on; when waling - screen freezes, sometimes requiring a push-button power down.

Now, if the SCSI scanner is powered, I am unable to boot the G4 at all - kernel panics at startup.

Don't know if it was an incremental MacOS update, installation of conflicting software, corruption or an Archive and Install that may have broken the functionality.

I'm guessing the problem may be due to obsolescence of Adaptec's driver for the 2930 PCI card (Adaptec290X-2930.kext), which has not been updated since 2/02 - but I'm open to suggestions.

Has anyone been able to get the Adaptec 2930 SCSI card to work with OS 10.4.11 on a G4?

Actually, there is some discussion and confusion about what extension should be used by this card. My System>Library>Extensions folder also includes: Adaptec78XXSCSI.kext and two others. Some say remove everything except the newer 78XXSCSI extension (3/05), some say whichever one is listed first will be used, etc - a lot of suggestions involving voodo, black cats and prayer. One person suggests a driver from ATTO worked.

Quicksilver G4, was 867MHz, now 1.47 GHz (FastMac CPU), Mac OS X (10.4.11)

OK, I'm answering my own question, if that's allowed.

I downloaded the Mac driver install package from Adaptec's site for the Power Domain 2930U:
http://www.adaptec.com/en-US/speed/mac/scsi/apd2930X_v11hqx.htm
. . . and ran the UN-install script that comes with that download.

After running the uninstall script, I checked my System>Library>Extensions folder to see what had been removed. The following file was gone:
Adaptec290X-2930.kext.

Still remaining in that folder, were:
Adaptec78XXSCSI.kext
Adaptec29160x.kext
Adaptec39160.kext

After restarting and repairing permissions - I shut down, powered on the SCSI scanner, and got a normal startup. Before the fix, I was getting a kernel panic every time I attempted to startup with the scanner on.

There is an entry in my System Log:
"localhost kernel[0]: Adaptec78XXSCSIController: Resetting Hardware"
. . . so I believe that is the one that is working for me. The version of my Adaptec78XXSCSI.kext is 1.1.2, created 3/26/05. I have no idea where I got it - may be part of a Mac OS install or update?

According to Adaptec's Read Me:
"Under Mac OS X, the driver for the Adaptec PowerDomain 2930U and the Adaptec SCSI Card 2906 is the same. If you have already installed the corresponding driver for the 2906, you don't need to install the driver for the 2930."

. . . so this fix may work for 2930 cards, too.
