I can't login anymore to the server, neither via Remote Desktop nor ssh

Situation:
New Xserve Xeon 4-core runing services:
AFP, DHCP, DNS, Firewall, FTP, iCal, OD, SMB, Web

After some days I can't login anymore to the server, neither via Remote Desktop nor ssh nor direct login at the machine. WWW service also not respnding.
Seems like server drops every incoming connection. But DHCP and DNS is working.

The only solution I found was to reboot the server with Server Monitor (not really an optimal solution :-/ ).

I'll try to disable SSL in OD, maby it will help ... 😟

Somebody got these problems ??!!??

Xserve, Mac OS X (10.5.2), Xeon 4-core

I have the same problems on both of my servers running 10.5.2. They will be fine for a few days then some of the access ports will shut down (22, 311). Screen Sharing will allow me to see the login screen, but with no login window. After a physical restart everything is fine again, until the next time. Web, afp and some other services are fine. Very strange.

I'm stuck as well.

Everything was working well until the server was restarted. At the login window, there was no account/pin combination that would allow me to even log on to the machine.

The server seems to be responding, most services are still functional. Wiki and iChat are fine, but iCal is not longer working.

Very strange. I still don't get how I can't even log on the machine.

Hi All,
I am also having this problem, any ideas how to fix? I notice that when this is happening the DirectoryService program uses up the remaining CPU power. That is what stops the other services on my xserve. Its driving me crazy.

Cheers,
Hamish.

I may or may have had the same problem as you, but here's my 2¢ for what it's worth:

For no apparent reason, I couldn't login anymore using the admin account I setup the xserve with. The account was named "admin". On a hunch, I tried logging in as "Local Administrator" because I discovered when trying to use Apple Remote Desktop that using that account seemed to be necessary. I had come across a message board posting that suggest that at least; something to do with it being setup as a "Standard" installation. I'm not sure if that's true or not, but the "Local Administrator" account worked with ARD, using the "admin" account's password.

So anyways, I tried logging in with the "Local Administrator" account and it worked just fine. Then I looked under Accounts in the System Preferences and my "admin" account was gone. I have no idea what happened, but things seem to be fine now. :-/

Edit: On a side note, the "admin" account still shows up in Server Preferences as a network account.

Same thing just happened to me. I had to run down to the office (lucky I'm 15 minutes away) and reboot it (from power button) as I couldn't log in remotely. Basically I couldn't log in, and DHCP appeared to stop working too.

This happens to us weekly. Driving me insane.

Has anyone reported it to Apple? I'd log it in bug tracker, but I don't really know the cause of it, and nothing seems to be reporting itself as crashing in CrashReporter, so I'm not sure what I can tell them.

Hi Guys,
I have had this problem too, but I was able to fix it.

I moved all the files in folder /var/db/dslocal/nodes/Default/config/ using these comands:

mkdir ~/Desktop/Backup
mv /var/db/dslocal/nodes/Default/config/ServicesInformation* ~/Desktop/Backup

Restart the server and let me know if it works!

Cheers,
Hamish.

I'v just risked and moved those files to Backup folder. Will see what happens next.
These files seamed very strange for me also. I've had 226 of these
ServicesInformation.plist
ServicesInformation1.plist
ServicesInformation11.plist
ServicesInformation111.plist
an so on ....

For first time i suspected that SSH isn't working properly so I disabled it in ServerAdmin Services pane.

So if this bug stops, i don't know wich of those steps are right.
So anyway i'll post after 8-15 or so days, if everything works. ....

I can't login anymore to the server, neither via Remote Desktop nor ssh
