Palm Sync USB cable not working with Tiger

I have an old Palm V that I still use (yes it is old but it still works fine). I also have a USB sync & power cable for it that worked fine with both Mac OS X 10.2 and Mac OS X 10.3.

However unfortunately it is not working with 10.4 (not a huge surprise but disappointing nether the less).

The symptoms are that it does show up as an available connection in HotSync Manager (and I have ticked it to turn it on), I can press the Sync button on either the cable or the Palm V and it does trigger the launch of Conduit Manager (to begin the Sync process), but it then gets stuck with the message "Establishing Connection". I have tried various connection speeds (e.g. 9600, all the way up to "as fast as possible"). The Palm shows the message "The connection between your handheld computer and desktop could not be established. Please check your setup and try again."

I have tried both USB ports directly off the PowerBook.

I 'inherited' this Sync cable and it came minus the manual and software. However it was labelled with a product code of CN-109 for use with a Palm V and I found via Google that it appeared to be made by Sitecom (see http://www.sitecom.com/faq2.php?grp_id=2&prodid=43 ). This driver as indicated above works fine for 10.2 and 10.3.

Unfortunately again, Sitecom have not updated their driver for years.

So my question is a) has any one else got such a cable to work under Tiger, b) is any one aware of a similar cable THAT IS STILL ON SALE that does work with Tiger (I have not been able to find one).

Note: a Palm V and Vx cable would be identical. The only difference between these two models was the amount of memory.

I had considered buying a new Palm a while ago but around that time PalmSource said they were dropping Mac support (for PalmOS 6). Since then no PalmOS 6 devices have actually been released but now PalmOne (now called Palm again) have announced their next Palm Treo will be running Windows Mobile and not PalmOS (the horror!). I had been holding off purchasing a new model as a protest over the lack of Mac support.

MissingSync or PocketMac might have been valid solutions except a) they are not bundled, b) they cost extra, c) you don't get a corresponding discount off the Window Mobile software that is useless to a Mac user, d) all the existing Palm conduits are made useless.

If Palm move all their future products to Windows Mobile then their sales are going to crash as they will LOOSE ALL THEIR MAC CUSTOMERS (which amounts to way more than 5% of their sales), why buy a 'PocketPC' from Palm when better or cheaper devices are already available from other manufacturers.

Microsoft if they had any sense at all would do a version of ActiveSync for Mac. This would INCREASE SALES OF POCKET PCs.
