iPod Classic digital OUT for hi-fi

I am convinced that the iPod could be used as part of a true audiophile hi-fi system but apple seem determined to make it as difficult as possible. Of course this means that there are now dozens of hi-fi dock connectors but they all connect to line in sockets on a hi-fi amp.

I assume that the dock connector socket on the base of the Classic includes a digital audio output but this is not mentioned anywhere that I have found. This means that if a suitable cable can be found it could be connected to the digital IN of a DAC thus using what is likely to be a far superior converter for, in this case, apple lossless files.

I have been able to find a dock connector to 3.5mm jack cable but the manufacturer is unable(!) to confirm whether this carries a digital or only analogue signal and seemed unaware of a difference.

So,

Q1 Is there a digital audio output from the dock connector?
Q2 Is there a dock to 3.5mm jack digital cable?
