sorry, I was wrong. To change those dates with apple script you need to install some apple script extensions which isn't worth the hassle.

Do it with SetFile. It's part of Xcode tools on the leopard install disk. You don't even have to install everything. Using [Pacifist|http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/12743] you can install just one single unix command SetFile.

if you are still interested, you can change the modification date using the following terminal command:

*touch -t YYYYMMDDHHMM.SS path/to/file*

If the date you enter is earlier than the current creation date on the file, the creation date will be changed as well. If not only the modification date will be changed.

Last login: Mon Apr 14 17:32:56 on console
Macintosh:~ poncethedog$ touch -t 200803290410.00 Users/poncethedog/Music/iTunes/iTunes Music/Landon Pigg/ Falling In Love At The Coffee Shop - Single/ 01 Falling In Love At A Coffee Shop.m4a
touch: Users/poncethedog/Music/iTunes/iTunes: No such file or directory
touch: Pigg/: No such file or directory
touch: Single/: No such file or directory
---------

That's what comes up when I try to do that. I checked the spelling and such; they are spelled correctly.

if a name has a space in it, it should be enclosed in quotes. This means the command should be

touch -t 200803290410.00 Users/poncethedog/Music/iTunes/"iTunes Music"/"Landon Pigg"/"Falling In Love At The Coffee Shop - Single"/"01 Falling In Love At A Coffee Shop.m4a"

Alternatively, just type

*touch -t 200803290410.00*

press space and drag the file in question to the terminal window.
Press enter.

Thanks V.K.! This is one of the coolest tricks ever. I had a slew of old WordPerfect files from '93-'94 that were appearing in Finder as "Unix Executable File." I used MacLinkPlus to translate them (no problem) to Word files, but the creation dates were changed to today, which means I lost the order in which I wrote this stuff. I opened every file and input dates from about-to-be-trashed WP files (lots of work), but was unhappy about not being able to list files by date. I found this thread and your answer. Everything is copasetic now! Thanks again! Terminal is tops!
