iSync + LG phones

OK, so it's pretty much been established that LG phones don't work with iSync (or Salling Clicker for that matter), I found this out the hard way after upgrading to a LG KF600 from my trusty Sony Ericsson K800i. I am just wondering if there is an iSync plugin of some description for this phone or any other reliable way for me to sync my new phone with my Mac, I really don't want to have to add all my contacts to the new phone manually.

I would also like to suggest that LG users (or anyone else for that matter) send an email to Apple Support suggesting that they develop compatibility for LG phones and iSync as I'm sure it is not that hard to do. It may not make a difference but it's worth a try and is not much effort.

Thanks.

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.5.1), PC desktop (for now)

There is no plug in because there is no underlying framework on your LG mobile handset to support synchronization with iSync, which uses common, industry wide protocols such as those bundled with the Symbian operating system.

Unless and until LG decides to abandon its proprietary protocols, build an OS X synchronization application as it does for the Windows operating system, or Apple decides—and its a near sure bet that Apple never will decide—to build a synchronization interface to the proprietary LG protocol, you will not be able to synchronize your mobile handset to OS X.

Instead of advising LG owners to email Apple and ask them to spend +their time+ reverse engineering a proprietary syncing protocol for inclusion in iSync, I think it would be much more beneficial to everyone (not just Mac owners) if everyone emailed LG and pushed them to start supporting industry standard syncing protocols such as SyncML in their mobile phones.

I don't see why it should be Apple's responsibility to support non-standard protocols - they've already built in support for the industry standard ones, and that's why industry standards are a good thing.

If Sony Ericsson, Nokia, Motorola, Samsung etc. can all stick to the standards - why not LG?

It's unfortunate you didn't check for Mac compatibility before purchasing your new phone, if syncing and remote control are important features to you.

Sorry I did intend to suggest emailing LG instead/as well. However, even in the slim chance that they decided to act on it would only affect future phone releases (i assume?) whereas any changes Apple made could be sorted with an iSync update. Apple also has a much better customer service. This is all by the by anyway as there's not really any chance anything would come for emailing either.

Yes its a shame I didn't research this beforehand, I just assumed that there was only one type of Bluetooth protocol but oh well. I am happy with my LG in most other respects (its a lot better looking than the phones Sony Ericsson/Nokia/Motorola were offering) I just need a way of getting my contacts onto it.

It seems that LG may at least be considering Mac compatibility now. I develop iSync Plugins for Sony Ericsson phones, and last week, out-of-the-blue, had an email from someone at LG Electronics enquiring about iSync Plugins and possible new software development for them.

Unfortunately, it's a bit of a non-starter until they implement SyncML in their phones, unless they wanted to go to the trouble of writing a whole proprietary syncing application for Mac.

I'll see what else I can find out and maybe get some contact details I can publish for people to show their support for Mac compatibility in LG phones.

In the meantime, if your new phone has Bluetooth, and accepts the industry standard vCard format, you may be able to transfer your Contacts from the Mac Address Book that way. Drag Contacts to the Desktop then send them to the phone with Bluetooth File Exchange.

You may not have to create individual vCards for each Contact. If you drag multiple Contacts from Address Book you get a single vCard containing multiple contacts. Many phones will accept this, which makes it a much quicker process.

If your phone won't accept multi-contact vCards, try vCard Blaster or vCard Splitter.

You may also have to change the vCard format in Address Book preferences from v3.0 to v2.1.
