cannot send email from my Touch (connection to smtp server fails)

Hello,

I have a new iPod Touch with 1.1.4 and the January apps. I am having a problem setting the Mail application.

I am trying to connect to the IMAP/SMTP servers at my university. I am using the exact same settings and passwords I use on my laptop, which works fine. I can receive email fine on my Touch, but every time I try to send one it fails tellings me "the connection to the outgoing server smtp.myuniversity.edu failed".

If I on purpose write a wrong password for the outgoing mail, the error message I get is different ("check the account settings for the outgoing server smtp.myuniversity.edu").

The university IT people confirmed my settings, and told me that there is nothing blocking any handheld device from using the server.

Does anyone know why this would happen?

Hi,

Have you turned "Use SSL" on in advanced settings > outgoing settings?

I don't know what it does but it made mine work.

The explanation at http://webnet77.com/secure-email.html is as good as any. Note that not all email servers support SSL; for some it is optional, for others it may be mandatory.

Also, if the SSL toggle still does not work, have you tried changing the outgoing port to 587?

Some systems keep the default port (25) open, but others close that and require the less used port of 587 to send outgoing SMTP mail.

2) I am indeed using SSL, as instructed by IT

3) I do use port 587 instead of 25 (25 does not work either)

Another option is to check the "Sync selected Mail accounts" on the Info tab of the configuration page for iPod in iTunes.

This should replicate all the email settings exactly onto the iPod.

Does that do anything?

I am afraid the info part on iTunes is how I set up Mail in the Touch in the first place...

Try switching the outgoing port to 993..... (this is sometimes needed for SSL).

Did not work either...

Incidentally, it is not just my university's smtp server. I created a Goggle mail account and used that one. Again the Touch failed to connect to the outgoing smtp server.

I will do a full restore today. I have no clue what else to try.

Do you have a .Mac address? If so, I assume that SMTP is not working either?

And Mac Mail on the laptop is sending mail out without a problem?

If it is, then remove all accounts manually on the iPod touch.... then let it re-sync with the Mail settings from the laptop (via itunes).

OK, I really do not understand anymore...

I did a full restore on the Touch, unselected the "sync mail account from computer", and manually setup mail on the Touch, using the exact same settings as I had before (with port 587).

Now it works... Go figure...
