DUPLICATE A CD?

You were on the right track with the disc image idea in Disk Utility. Which options are puzzling you?

Put in the CD, open Disk Utility, select the partition of the CD (ie the indented thing underneath the main CD description), then go up to File->New->Disk Image from ___ (in my case, it says Disk Image from disk2s0).

Specifically, there are no such options under File>New......

Am I missing something ? the instructions #2 is exactly the same as Jeff's post #2.1.1. Anyhow, I see you got it #2.1.1.1.

When I try this, the option for "Disk Image from (Select a Device)..." is grayed out and un-selectable.

Now, one thing to point out, this is on a commercial audio cd that I purchased, so it's not just a data cd of images as the original poster needed to copy.

By the way, I'm fully legal here, simply trying to make a copy of this cd so that I can listen to it in my car. The only audio cd player that I use is in my car, and the reality is that any cd I bring into my car tends to get scratched and ruined. So clearly, I prefer to leave the original at home, safely inside a case.

This is something I have done in the past using Disk Utility, and it was never complicated before.

Does anybody know what's going on? Did Apple modify Disk Utility so that it won't copy audio cds? I suspect this is what happened, which is a bit annoying for my situation. I want to make one copy on a cheap cd blank, and once that's trashed I'll make another one. This should be fully allowable within my rights, as I'm creating a duplicate for the sole purpose of maintaining a back-up copy.

That is precisely as you have suspected, Disk Utility does not copy audio CD. You can however use iTunes to import and then burn to a CD.

Another option is to use Roxio Toast.

I've already made some copies by ripping to iTunes first, then burning to audio cd. That will get the job done, but I would prefer to make plain old disk image. I do not own Toast, and can't really justify buying a copy just so that I can duplicate cds like I used to with Disk Utility.

I'm not aware of any application that will allow you to make an image copy of an audio CD. It's due to the way data is heavily interleaved on an audio CD for error correction purposes. I did a term paper in college on CD audio technology, so I became quite familiar with the subject.

Well, I can absolutely gaurantee that Disk Utility used to do exactly this, because I've done it before.

I don't think there's anything specific about the format of the audio cd that prevents copying, it's just data. A duplication process shouldn't care what the format is from the master, just read source data, copy to destination, repeat. This is exactly what large-scale cd duplication machines do.
