Importing from Panasonic PV-GS12

I'm using iMovie 7.1.1 on an Intel iMac running 10.5.2. I can't get my camera, a Panasonic Pv-GS12 recognized over Firewire. When I open System profiler nothing shows in the USB section until I hook up via USB. The camera has USB and Firewire ports. When hooked up via USB I see this in System Profiler
Version: 1.00
Bus Power (mA): 500
Speed: Up to 12 Mb/sec
Manufacturer: Panasonic
Product ID: 0x2316
Serial Number: d1347609
Vendor ID: 0x04da

I've tried running the camera in playback mode and in PC mode. According to the camera docs PC mode is for transferring video to a computer. I've seen some old posts from people with the same camera.

What media are you importing, tape? My understanding is you require a firewire cable [about $20 in my town] to import from video tape to imovie, then when running camcorder in playback mode, imovie is supposed to 'see' the camcorder and bring up some further screens/options. I am also having trouble importing anything to imovie 7.1.1 : almost none of my menu items are active, can't start a new project or anything, console tells me there is a dictionary error in imovie. Are your imovie menu items active when you just start it up?. My system profiler does see my Panasonic GS150 on my firewire port so I think it must be an imovie software install script problem, I have re-installed a few times and that hasn't worked yet
Sorry i couldn't be more help. More sorry it doesn't 'just work' like on the adds.
Good luck, could you post your solution if you figure it out?

Yes, I'm trying to import from tape. I can play the tape and see the playback on the camera LCD. I have two cables, Firewire and USB and two ports on the camera. The only time I see the camera in System Profiler is when hooked up via USB. I checked the cable and computer Firewire ports by hooking up an external disk.

Hi KC5MZR

The Panasonic PV-GS12 will transfer video in video record mode and video playback mode using the DV connection (IEEE). PC Mode is restricted to memory card access via USB.

I am new to my Mac Book, but from a PC perspective the operating system will load the DV/IEEE driver necessary for the devices to communicate. I assume it is much the same with Mac. I would test it on another Mac or PC and change the cable. So long as the camera is on video record (live video) or video playback (tape transfer) there should not be a problem.

It could be a problem with the DV port and I would recommend testing it further.

Best of Luck!
