Deleted dylib file: libgcc_s.1.dylib

Well, ever since I upgraded from 10.3.9 to 10.5.2 I have been pulling my hair out, since my fortran compiler and other programs (fink) weren't quite working.

Tried all day to get my computer right and made a HUGE MISTAKE by deleting the dylib file:
/usr/lib/libgcc_s.1.dylib
AND NOW EVERYTHING IS REALLY NOT WORKING!

Can't open X11.
Terminal opens but says: dyld:
Library not loaded: /usr/lib/libgcc_s.1.dylib
Referenced from: /usr/bin/login
Reason: image not found

[Process completed]

and won't do anything.
Can't get installer to get past the initial screen where the Continue Box is black (i.e. not greyed out). If this would work, I could reinstall gcc4.0 from the MacOSX 10.5 install DVD and MAYBE replace the library, but can't get it to do anything.

I am basically at my wits end with all of this and just want to get back to work!

Thanks for any comments and advice.

Did you retain a bootable backup/clone of your Panther installation. if not, zap the PRAM and try to reinstall, using the A&I option. Mucking around in the bowels is sometimes messy, but having a bootable backup/clone obviates those problems. If so, wipe the Leopard installation, restore the backup/clone, and try reinstalling Leopard. Once you've done that, make a bootable backup/clone of it before making major changes.

Thanks for the help.

Unfortunately, I did not make a bootable backup/clone of my Panther installation.

I did indeed zap the PRAM. I then tried to reinstall 10.5 from the DVD and heres how it went:
Inserted the DVD and CLicked on Install Mac OSX.
WHen asked to restart and begin the installation process I did so.
Upon restarting, the computer just asked me to log in as if there wasn't anything going on with an installation. I logged in and nothing happened (no install that is) and everything is still acting bizaar (terminal, X11 terminal, couldn't install things from DVD, etc).

What if I were to "go back" and reinstall 10.4 and then try 10.5? Also, should I back everything up at this point before I loose it forever? (and by it, I mean my dissertation work!!)

Thanks for anyhelp!

Thanks for the feedback and star. Open the /Previous Systems folder, go through each item in /Library, and put anything in there related to 3rd-party apps/utilities into the same place in the new /Library folder. Once you've ascertained that everything's been recovered, delete the Previous Systems folder.

Once that's finished, get a bootable, external HD, and make a bootable backup/clone before upgrading/updating and ensure that works like the original. That allows you to revert to the previous good state without having to reinstall anything. See these for details:
