best external hard drive for macbook pro

i'm looking to buy a portable hard drive for my laptop because i have a lot of music and whatnot. here's the deal though, i'm a college student and have no money, but i don't want to get something cheap that's going to break.

so to summarize:

relatively cheap, small, easy to use (one touch back up maybe)

if anyone has any suggestions that would be great!

thanks 🙂

See the firewire section of macsales.com for their 2.5 inch drives.

Hi,

Though I agree about Macsales' firewire drives, they're not "relatively cheap", IMO.

The Western Digital passports are about the least expensive I've seen for price per Gigabyte. Only caveat is that they run on USB2.0 and not firewire. But if all you need is portable storage space the WD passports should be on your list to consider.

Good luck.

Though not cheap, it is worth every penny. The G-Drive Mini is one of my best MBP purchases to date. They are small, sleek, reliable and "match" my MBP. I bought the regular sized one a couple of years ago and it's never failed me. I'm traveling for work much more these days and want to be able to take something with me. This is perfect.

Time Capsule is more expensive (b/c it's also a wifi base station). Also not really portable. So it probably doesn't fit the original poster's needs. (Backup on time capsule is easy, because it works with Time Machine in Leopard; some people apparently have had problems getting it to work, judging from the discussion forum for that, but I love mine.)

I have a Seagate on my eMac that I like (and it has one-touch backup), but it's not portable either.
