Tiger vs. Panther on G3/ older G4 Macs

I am considering upgrading to Panther on my G3 400/ 450 iMacs or my G4 Sawtooth 450. 10.3.8 runs well on all of them (a lot snappier than Windows would on a much newer PC, I might add...). Can anyone advise whether I will get simliar performance with Tiger on machines of this vintage (all have at least 512 MB of RAM, by the way), and what other advantages i may see in running Tiger vs. Panther.

According to a chart I saw which extensive tests were done Tiger 10.4 vs Panther 10.3.9.

Tiger gave just about all G5 CPU's a performance increase

Tiger gave just about all Mac's that can run it a vastly greater User Interface performance than Panther.

Also Safari got a fast update around 10.4.2 sometime.

Now the drawbacks are this, Apple has of course been updating Tiger, so eventually a update is going to start affecting the older machines. So knowing when to say when will be wise. Perhaps stop at 10.4.2

Also Widgets and Spotlight can affect performance, but searching online you can find Terminal commands/software to disable them for the best performance.

Make sure you update your harddrives drivers before doing Tiger by searching the manufactorers websites.

You might want to install Tiger on a extra drive and run it off that before commiting, run some X-Bench tests etc.

Cloning your boot drives is a smart and easy way to play and backup.
